Ask Computer Networking Questions and Get Answers ASAP
Hi my name is XXXXX XXXXX I would be happy to help.
So what is happening here is somehow two computers on your network have the gotten the same IP address but we can figure out why.
Before we begin do this.
Go to each computer on the network (unless were talking about 50 of them or something) and do the following
Hit the Windows Key on the keyboard (Should be next to alt) and type "CMD" and hit enter. This will bring up a black box. Tyoe in "Ipconfig" and hit enter. This will display the computers IP address. Lets find the two that have the same one.
Do this on all the computers that are there and on right this second
You are still getting the error, right?
I ask because sometimes these things clear themselves up
Im sorry.. above you should be hitting that windows key and the letter "r" at the same time to bring up that run box
going to check now....may take a few minutes
ok no problem
I don't think this is going to work because my black box keeps going away on this computer and I don't know the password XXXXX my daughter's computer who is at school.
hmm, what do you mean the blackbox keeps going away?
When I hit the windows key and type in config, it flashes up for a second and goes away.
ah, you missed a step
in the box type in CMD
this will bring up the black box to stay
then type in Ipconfig
into the black box
okay, i will try
Also tell me what it says for default gateway.
And also what version of Windows you are running if you could
gateway is 192.168.1.1
Not sure about windows - we have 4 computers in the house
ok what did it say for IP address
That number is XXXXX my lap top.. I will try the desk top now (it's the one with the problem)
I need the I address number. I wanted the gateway as well, but the IP address is the immportant one
desk top gateway is 192.168.1.1
I think we found it!
Ha not quite yet
The gateway is supposed to be the same for all computers
The IP address is what we are looking for
There are several ip addresses: IPv6 or Ipv4?
Should be 192.168.1.x
Desk top is 192.168.1.143
ah ok perfect
And what about the laptop
my lap top is 192.168.1.141
I can go look at my other daugthers computer (we will call that lap top #2) give me a sec.
lap top #2 is 192.168.0.7
ok do you know what version of Windows your desktop is running?
no - is there a way I can find out?
Go to start and right click on computer and choose properties
It should say in the new Window
it says 7 Windows explorer
Do this for me
Go to start and control panel
Click view network status and tasks
click Change adapter settings
Locate your local area connection, right click it and choose properties
Highlight IP Version 4 and click properties
hold on there is a network and internet
It shold be under that
okay I see tasks and below that I see view computers and divices; Connect to a network; set up a connection; manage network connections and diagnose and repair
Look on the left for change adapter settings
sorry I don't see it
should I click the manage network connections
Yes lets do that one
Once clicking that do you see youre local area connection?
okay, now a box has appeared and at the top it says Local Area connection Properties
ok great, do you see IP version 4?
yes it's in a list
ok highlight that and choose properties
now I have internet protocol version 4 properties
Now then, do you see a bunch of numbers in here or do you see obtain automatically?
obtain automatically is chosen - there are no numbers
Let me ask, do you still have that black box from earlier up?
ok lets try relaeasing the iIP address and renewing it.
Read both parts because the first part will temporarily disconnect you
first type in ipconfig /release
Once that is done type in ipconfig /renew
This will renew your IP address\
and hope fully change it
okay i got "an error occurred while renewing interface local area connection: 0x80ef0005
I tell you what
did I need to wait before typing the renew? I may have done it too quick
I think maybe the best thing is for me to opt out and let another tech follow up
There are numerous techs on here and it should only take a few minutes for another tech to look it over
ok dont rate my answer, rate the other tech to avoid being billed twice. Thanks!
