I have a WRT5-4GS wireless modem managed by LELA version 3.0.

Question

I have a WRT5-4GS wireless modem managed by LELA version 3.0. When I attempt to
add a non-computer device (I am interested in an iPhone 4S, and my son is
concerned about a Nintendo 3DS), the network does not accept it. On the off
chance I typed in the password XXXXX I have tried it over 10 times.

What do you recommend as my next step?

Hi,

If you are using an iPhone and a 3DS then you need to make sure you are using
the most compatible wireless security type for those devices which is
WPA2-Personal.

So can you go to a computer that can get online through the router then can you
open an Internet Browser Window and type http://192.168.1.1 [http://192.168.1.1]
then hit enter to open the routers login page or just lcick the link in blue.

When prompted type your admin username and password ( If you have not changed it
just leave the username blank and enter admin as the password XXXXX if you
cannot get in can you try admin for the username and admin for the password)

When you get logged into the router can you click the Wireless tab then click
the Wireless Security link under the Wireless tab and let me know what is
selected for security type

You were correct that the security type was not set to WPA2-personal. Updated
this using the method recommended. Tried interfacing the 3DS. Had two options of
WPA2 type networks. Chose WPA2-PSK tkip. Was unable to get on the network.

The text says something about failure to connect, and lists that as one
possibility. The passcode is in hexidecimal, and has around 20 characters. It is
certainly within the realm of possibility that one digit was not typed
correctly. I will try several more times to eliminate that. The 3DS is a 3DS.
Are there sub-versions for the 3DS?

if it is the first generation 3DS then we will need to switch your security back
to WPA not WPA2 as it will only support WEP or WPA and WPA is more secure

so can you go back to the router and change the security to WPA and enter a
simple pre shared key like your 10 digit phone number with area code

then wait 2 minutes and see if the DS will then connect

Good news; the 3DS is apparently not 'first generation', as it supports WPA2
encryption. This is good because I still want the iPhone on the same network.
Have tried both forms of personal WPA2 again on the 3DS, with the typing and the
typing, to no effect. Have changed the passcode to something simple. Tried both
forms of personal WPA2 again on the 3DS, with the simple passcode, to no effect.

Ok, in that case the DS should connect fine

The iphone will support WPA as well as WPA2 so can you try setting to WPA and
then connecting both so we can see if they will connect

If not can you try changing the network name (SSID) and changing back to
WPA2-Personal (AES) and then seeign if they will connect to the newly named
network

Since the 3DS did not connect with WPA2, are you recommending trying again using
WPA?

Yes, either try WPA as a test or go to the wireless security page and change the
network name (SSID) and leave it as WPA2

We have a couple of options and I would like to rty both so you may wish to
change the network name (SSID) first and see what happens with the DS then if it
does not work we can then try WPA

sometimes just renaming a network will allow a device to connect, just make sure
to use a one word name without a space

FYI the 3DS has only been on the market 8 months. I suspect it is fully
compatible with WPA2.

According to the tech specs of the 3DS it only supports WPA and WEP, however I
know an update was sent out that set it to accept WPA2

that is why I was wondering how old it was so we could see what it supported

Ah. We bought ours two weeks ago. Given that it has WPA2 as a selectable option
on the interface page, I am inclined to believe it has the software update.
Maybe not. Maybe we will need to interface using WPA, then download the update.

If it shows the WPA2 option then it is the new firmware so it should connect
fine, Can you try the new SSID (Network Name) and then let me know what happens

Have tried WPA2, WEP, and WPA with current network name. No success. Proceeding
with change of network name.

Have tried a new network name, with WPA2 (both tkip and aes) and with WPA. No
success.

I would like to try uupdating the routers firmware to see if it will allow the
WPA2 connection to work.

So can you go to the Linksys website here
http://homesupport.cisco.com/en-us/wireless/linksys
[http://homesupport.cisco.com/en-us/wireless/linksys] once there can you enter
your model number in the top box then choose the download link in the middle of
the page and then enter the model version which will be on the label on the
bottom of your router.

When the download page opens can you download the latest firmware and save it to
your desktop.

Once downloaded can you then open the linksys config screen and click the
Administration link and then choose Firmware then click the browse button and
find the file you downloaded then hit upgrade firmware and let it work.

Once it is finished can you wait approx 2 minutes and then see if your devices
will now connect cleanly.

Then if that does not work I would like to make sure your MAc filter is not
turned on by logging into the router and going to wireless then clicking
Wireless Mac filter and making sure it is set to off

A bit of a problem. the download button on the Cisco website crashes Firefox,
and causes IE to issue a 'filetype not found' type of error. Who would have
thought this part would be hard??
