XXXXX XXXXXnigan :

Hello. My name isXXXXX will be your Primary Care Technician and I can assist you with your question.

XXXXX XXXXXnigan :

Is there a proxy server on your network, or are the settings erroneous?

Customer:

Hi. I am not sure of the right answer. Can you explain what I could look for.

XXXXX XXXXXnigan :

Tell me what you are experiencing. that would be a good place to start

XXXXX XXXXXnigan :

If there are errors, I will need the exact wording

Customer:

My PC is no longer able connect to the internet either by direct connect via DSL modem or via wireless router. I did trouble shooting to detect problem and it says I need to fix network proxy setting.

XXXXX XXXXXnigan :

Ok. I know those aren't the exact words, but I will try to work with it.

XXXXX XXXXXnigan :

So let's try this.

XXXXX XXXXXnigan :

Open internet explorer.

XXXXX XXXXXnigan :

And then select internet options.

Customer:

The wording: "Windows could not automatically detect this network's proxy setting" It also shows "limited connectivity when I try to connecttot he internet.

XXXXX XXXXXnigan :

Select the connections tab

XXXXX XXXXXnigan :

Open internet explorer.

And then select internet options.

XXXXX XXXXXnigan :

Select the connections tab

Customer:

I have the connection tab open now

XXXXX XXXXXnigan :

Ok... then click the LAN setting button

Customer:

Done

XXXXX XXXXXnigan :

On the next page, is there an information where the proxy settings are?

XXXXX XXXXXnigan :

?

XXXXX XXXXXnigan :

I'm guessing it says "automatically detect proxy...

XXXXX XXXXXnigan :

and that is checked

Customer:

I am not sure what it should read. I seeseveral things

XXXXX XXXXXnigan :

That sounds like a yes.

Customer:

Automatically detect settingsis checked

XXXXX XXXXXnigan :

I don't need you to read anythging.

Customer:

ok

XXXXX XXXXXnigan :

Now, before I have you change this. Do you have any reason to believe that you are supposed to be using a proxy server (for 99%of internet users, that would be "no")

XXXXX XXXXXnigan :

stay with me here.

XXXXX XXXXXnigan :

don't get ahead

Customer:

I dont know. I have a router that connects my computers

XXXXX XXXXXnigan :

OK... so no. If you used a proxy server, you would immediately know the answer. So that's good.

XXXXX XXXXXnigan :

Change that check mark to no proxy server.

XXXXX XXXXXnigan :

Rather... make it so nothing is checked on that page

Customer:

Do youmean uncheck the "automatically detect setting"?

XXXXX XXXXXnigan :

uncheck that

XXXXX XXXXXnigan :

Are any of the other boxes checked?

Customer:

ok

Customer:

no

XXXXX XXXXXnigan :

ok

XXXXX XXXXXnigan :

So apply that or click ok.

Customer:

ok

XXXXX XXXXXnigan :

And then try going to a known good site like google

Customer:

ok

XXXXX XXXXXnigan :

You may have to restart the computer.

Customer:

ok. I will restart

XXXXX XXXXXnigan :

ok

Customer:

I am waitingf or restart to complete

Customer:

Restarted. Not able to open the internet

XXXXX XXXXXnigan :

Has anything changed at all?

Customer:

I cant tell. Does not look like anything changed.

XXXXX XXXXXnigan :

Are you getting the same error message about the proxy?

Customer:

I am checking

XXXXX XXXXXnigan :

What do you have to do to reproduce the error? Just go through the diagnosis?

Customer:

When I trouble shoot to connection to the router

Customer:

I will gothrough the diagnosis now

Customer:

Now it says "troubleshooting couldn't identify theproblem". This is new

XXXXX XXXXXnigan :

Ok. So that's a step.

XXXXX XXXXXnigan :

The proxy error is solved... you had to get that out of the way first.

Customer:

ok

XXXXX XXXXXnigan :

Is the computer wired or wireless?

Customer:

wireless

Customer:

Also wired

XXXXX XXXXXnigan :

Which way are we working on it.

XXXXX XXXXXnigan :

Wired would be best

Customer:

wireless reports the proxy problem

XXXXX XXXXXnigan :

So, does wired work?

Customer:

Ok. I have it connected to the router by cable

Customer:

Wireddoes not work

XXXXX XXXXXnigan :

And you should have wireless disabled. Is that the case?

Customer:

I will go aheadand disable it now

XXXXX XXXXXnigan :

ok

XXXXX XXXXXnigan :

Then we just need to make sure the wired interface is set for DHCP and then restart.

Customer:

Not working

Customer:

ok

Customer:

What do I need to do for the DHCP

XXXXX XXXXXnigan :

I'm not saying each step is a complete fix

XXXXX XXXXXnigan :

Go to the network adapters

Customer:

ok

XXXXX XXXXXnigan :

right click on the connected wired adapter and go to properties

XXXXX XXXXXnigan :

then click on Internet Protocol V4

Customer:

ok

XXXXX XXXXXnigan :

and click configure.

XXXXX XXXXXnigan :

or properties

XXXXX XXXXXnigan :

You will either see numbers next or nothing except for a radio button selected on each of two options

Customer:

did

XXXXX XXXXXnigan :

Ok

XXXXX XXXXXnigan :

Do you see numbers there or is it mostly blank with automatic chosen

Customer:

Nothing. Opened to a different window. I clickedon confure. Did nothave optionfor properties

XXXXX XXXXXnigan :

Ok. You need to go back to where it says internet protocol V4

XXXXX XXXXXnigan :

click on that.

Customer:

Clinked

Customer:

Clickingonit

XXXXX XXXXXnigan :

Then click on properties

XXXXX XXXXXnigan :

Then a window will come up with a general tab

Customer:

properties is grayed out. Not able to click on it

XXXXX XXXXXnigan :

Did you first select Internet protocol V4

XXXXX XXXXXnigan :

?

Customer:

Yes. Itis still selected

XXXXX XXXXXnigan :

Is there a check next to it?

Customer:

Yes

XXXXX XXXXXnigan :

Are you an administrator on that computer?

Customer:

Yes

XXXXX XXXXXnigan :

So this isn't making sense.

XXXXX XXXXXnigan :

Let me send you a screeshot

Customer:

ok

XXXXX XXXXXnigan :

XXXXX XXXXXnigan :

And you must be looking at your wired adapter

Customer:

Looks same. I am looking at the wired.

XXXXX XXXXXnigan :

And you cannot click on properties?

Customer:

No.It is gray.

XXXXX XXXXXnigan :

What about uninstall

Customer:

Uninstall is also gray. But install is active

XXXXX XXXXXnigan :

Is there anything on that list that gives you at least the uninstall?

Customer:

Internet protocol v6 give me both properties and install, but not uninstall

XXXXX XXXXXnigan :

Ok. Try removing the check next to that.

XXXXX XXXXXnigan :

And on V4, remove the check and then place the check back

Customer:

Did.nothing changed

Customer:

There are 5 other items that show uninstall

XXXXX XXXXXnigan :

Something isn't right.

XXXXX XXXXXnigan :

You should be able to go to properties on that IPV4

XXXXX XXXXXnigan :

What does it say at the top?

XXXXX XXXXXnigan :

for hardware?

Customer:

Broadcom Netlink (TM) Gigabit Ethernet

XXXXX XXXXXnigan :

OK... now go back to where you just have the adapters showing

Customer:

did

XXXXX XXXXXnigan :

Make sure there are no other open setttings pages for network items

XXXXX XXXXXnigan :

Click on the wired network adapter and then at the top, click view stats of this connection

Customer:

did

XXXXX XXXXXnigan :

then click on details

XXXXX XXXXXnigan :

IT should say there DHCP

XXXXX XXXXXnigan :

And IP address

Customer:

Did. it is empty

XXXXX XXXXXnigan :

Ok... now we need to go to device manager.

XXXXX XXXXXnigan :

Right click on computer and select manage

Customer:

did

XXXXX XXXXXnigan :

Then click on device manager

XXXXX XXXXXnigan :

look on the right for network adapters

Customer:

did

XXXXX XXXXXnigan :

How many are there?

Customer:

7

XXXXX XXXXXnigan :

7?

XXXXX XXXXXnigan :

hmmm

XXXXX XXXXXnigan :

right click on each and select uninstall

Customer:

Including the wireless adapter?

XXXXX XXXXXnigan :

no

XXXXX XXXXXnigan :

you can leave that one

Customer:

ok. I have 2 left - DW 1525 (802.11n) and WAN Miniport - this one will not uninstall

XXXXX XXXXXnigan :

ok

XXXXX XXXXXnigan :

now restart

Customer:

ok

Customer:

done

XXXXX XXXXXnigan :

Everything will be working now

Customer:

Should I try to connect?

XXXXX XXXXXnigan :

did it recognize and install all the adapters?

Customer:

Yes it recognized the broadcom and installed it. Did not say anything about the others

XXXXX XXXXXnigan :

good

XXXXX XXXXXnigan :

So everything is working now

Customer:

Did not connect to the internet.

XXXXX XXXXXnigan :

But it is working now, correct?

XXXXX XXXXXnigan :

IF you go back into the adapter settings, you should be able to configure the IPV4

Customer:

Oh.I will openit now

Customer:

Should I highlight IPV$ and click on configure?

Customer:

I mean IPV4

XXXXX XXXXXnigan :

yes

Customer:

ok

Customer:

did

XXXXX XXXXXnigan :

Is it set for DHCP?

Customer:

Remind me where should I click for that

XXXXX XXXXXnigan :

click on ipv4

XXXXX XXXXXnigan :

then configure

XXXXX XXXXXnigan :

sorry

XXXXX XXXXXnigan :

properties

Customer:

Still grey on properties. Should I click install instead?

XXXXX XXXXXnigan :

No, that won't work.

Customer:

ok

XXXXX XXXXXnigan :

This is very unusual.

XXXXX XXXXXnigan :

Please go to start>all programs>accessories then right click on the command prompt icon and select run as administrator.

Customer:

done

XXXXX XXXXXnigan :

ok.

XXXXX XXXXXnigan :

Then in the window that opened, type

XXXXX XXXXXnigan :

ipconfig

XXXXX XXXXXnigan :

and press enter

XXXXX XXXXXnigan :

That should give you some information

Customer:

did. nothing

XXXXX XXXXXnigan :

did the black window open with a command prompt?

XXXXX XXXXXnigan :

where you can type?

Customer:

Yes. I typed in the command. It moved down to the same command in the next line

XXXXX XXXXXnigan :

Did you right click on command prompt and select "run as administrator"?

Customer:

Yes

XXXXX XXXXXnigan :

Do you have security software/firewalls on that computer that you can disable?

Customer:

Yes

Customer:

I have to find it

XXXXX XXXXXnigan :

OK

XXXXX XXXXXnigan :

Do that and try turning it off... this is all pretty unusual.

XXXXX XXXXXnigan :

It is 3AM here, and I have to take abreak for the night.

XXXXX XXXXXnigan :

I will be back online around

XXXXX XXXXXnigan :

XXXXX XXXXXnigan :

Or is it possible it was on a business network at some point?

Customer:

Do you want me to click the "accept" button for you now

XXXXX XXXXXnigan :

That would be good. If you do that, you will be able to leave me messages.

Customer:

It was working. No, it was not a business computer

Customer:

Ok. I will do that.

XXXXX XXXXXnigan :

ok

XXXXX XXXXXnigan :

We'll get back on it tomorrow

XXXXX XXXXXnigan :

Customer: replied 5 years ago.

Hi Mike, this is UL from last night. Are you online?

Expert:  Michael Hannigan replied 5 years ago.
I am here now.
Customer: replied 5 years ago.

Hi, I am here. How are you doing?

Expert:  Michael Hannigan replied 5 years ago.
When was the last time the computer was able to connect? Do you know an approximate date?
Customer: replied 5 years ago.
About 11/5 or 11/6
Customer: replied 5 years ago.
The chat window is different today. It iskind of difficult to work with. How can I make it look like last night.
Customer: replied 5 years ago.

Are you still here?

Expert:  Michael Hannigan replied 5 years ago.
Let's try doing a system restore to a date before that happened.

Go to Start > All Programs > Accessories > System Tools > System Restore,

Select a date and time prior to when you started having the issue.

Restart normally thereafter, and let me know the status.

Customer: replied 5 years ago.

ok.

Expert:  Michael Hannigan replied 5 years ago.
After doing that, even it is says it wasn't successful (sometimes it says that erroneously), check the connection.

Mike
Customer: replied 5 years ago.
ok. I dont think my chat window is not working like it should.
Expert:  Michael Hannigan replied 5 years ago.
This is QA format. It's a little different from chat and once it is switched, it can't be switched back. I'm not sure what happened that switched it.

But there is a benefit to this format in that you can leave me messages. I don't know if that makes you feel any better?
Customer: replied 5 years ago.
Ok. It is just that I dont see your answers in real time. Your reply goes to my email each time and I have to go to my email to see if you replied.
Expert:  Michael Hannigan replied 5 years ago.
Oh... sorry. You don't have to do that. Just come to this page:

http://www.justanswer.com/computer-networking/5theu-fix-network-s-proxy-setting.html

When you refresh the page, you will see my replies.
Customer: replied 5 years ago.
ok
Customer: replied 5 years ago.
Did the restored, but on restart, it went to a blue screen. Then it gave me a safe mode screen. I restarted on safe mode. Then it said to undo the restore. It would not allow to check connetions in safe mode. So, I am undoing the restore now.
Expert:  Michael Hannigan replied 5 years ago.
Ok... in that case, you should be able to start up in safe mode and do the restore from there.
Customer: replied 5 years ago.
I finished undoing the restore; however, I no longer see the previous restore points - 11/2 and 11/4. What I see now is dates from yesterday 11/11. Guess something got deleted.
