How do I uninstall McAfee Personal Firewall from my PC? I have the McAfee Total Protection package, but only want to disable the firewall and use Windows firewall instead.

I have a HP Pavilion DV6 Entertainment Notebook running Windows 7 Home.

Hi, and thanks for using JustAnswer.com.

So you only want to remove the personal firewall, not the whole mcafee program?

When you go to Start, Control Panel, Uninstall a program, then select McAfee... program and click on Change/Uninstall, does it let you uninstall the item you want, i.e. in this case Personal Firewall?

No, when I follow that procedure it wants to uninstall the whole program. I only want the firewall disabled

 

OK, it looks like does not let you uninstall individual components.

What happens when you disable the mcafee personal firewall?

It doesn't completely disable. I'm trying to set up my xbox 360 as an extender for windows media player, but for some reason McAfee firewall is blocking it. I have disabled the firewall, but I still get the same error. I figure uninstalling or completely disabling the firewall is the only way I can get around this...???
Unfortunately, mcafee program limits this. But let me provide you a free antivirus (no firewall) program, so you can uninstall mcafee completely.
You can use the Avast free antivirus program:

OK... I uninstalled McAfee and restarted the computer. I then installed Avast. Now I am getting an error when I try to start windows firewall:

 

"Windows could not start the Security Center service on Local Computer. Error
1079: the account specified for this service is different from the account
specified for other services running in the same process."

 

Any ideas?

Please click on start, and type services.msc and press Enter, then open the Security Center item, then at Startup type:, set to Automatic, then click on Start on the window. Then click on OK. Then check Firewall. Restart the computer if needed.

If needed, can you run this fix and confirm:

Then restart the computer and check.

still getting the error 1079. Also a pop up box saying "Windows Firewall can't change some of your settings - Error code 0x80070437"
That's strange. Can you setup the xbox? thanks.

zone alarm blocks media center from xbox as well...

sorry .... don't know how to do that!
When you open the Zone Alarm program, look for all the options/settings. The instructions can be similar to:

. Click on the Programs tab on the right of the window.
. From the list, select windows media center or browse to it.
.In the sections under Access, Server, or Send mail right-click on the question mark or red X and select Allow.
. Once complete, everything should be green along the entire row.

zone alarm still interfering with extenders!!!
Sorry. Please click Start->All programs->Accessories->System Tools->System Restore and restore the computer to any date before this issue has occurred.

still not working. re installed McAfee WITHOUT checking the firewall button, and also ran a registry repair program. Windows Firewall must be corrupt. Trying to find a download link to reinstall it...
Please click on start, and type services.msc and press Enter, then open the Windows Firewall item,

Then click on the Log On tab:

  1. check the radio button next to "This account:"
  2. click "Browse..."
  3. click "Advanced..."
  4. click "Find Now"
  5. select "LOCAL SERVICE" from the "Search results:" list
  6. click "OK"
  7. click "OK" again
  8. select and delete the black bullets from both password XXXXX
  9. hit "Apply"

Note: A message may be displayed: "The account NT AUTHORITY\LocalService has been granted the Log On As A Service right. ", confirm that.

 

Then click on the General tab, then at Startup type:, set to Automatic, then click on Start on the window. Then click on OK. Then check Firewall.
