The technician is correct - USB modems are only designed for a computer. You need to run their software to "unlock" the modem so it can connect. When you disconnect, the modem then locks itself again - It prevents unauthorized use.

Your computer can share the internet but only if it has a wireless card (WiFi) in it - does it?

oh right, would the same apply to prepaid usb modems? my daughter has one of them. We bought the dlink because the kid at the store said it would work with what we had

Yes, most usb modems are like that and will probably not work

You would need an unlocked usb modem which is hard to come by.

right we live in Darwin at the top of australia. Yes we have a number of options, we are running windows 7 so we would need a usb to support that right? Maybe Harvey Normans or Dick Smiths (although that is where we bought this from) JB Hi fi?
