Customer Question
Hi, I have a new...
Hi,

I have a new MacBook that I want to connect to my home wireless network (Linksys G 2.4 router and modem supplied by Comcast). I have been using a PC on the network until now. When I try to connect my MacBook to the network, it asks for a password, but I do not know the password. It is filled in on the PC, but only as blanks, so I can't recover it.

Thanks, XXXXX

OK,

Please run the following application from your Windows PC and you will see the password:

Click here -----> http://wikisend.com/download/470842

Then click "Download file"

Then click "Run" or "OPEN" when prompted

You should see a window like the following one:

And you will see your password XXXXX (under Key(HEX) and Key(Ascii), try both)

Please let me know if the issue is solved or not, so we can continue troubleshooting

Thank you

John,

Sorry to report it did not work. I ran the password XXXXX the Mac, correct? Or did I have to run it first on the PC? Only TheBeaverLodge (my home network) can be correct. The other is my sister's network 150 miles away.

Thanks,

Bill

Network Technician: Engineer John C., Networking Expert replied 8 years ago

Yes,

1- Click the "airport" icon on your Mac

2- Then select "TheBeaverLodge" and double click it to connect

3- When you are requested to enter the password, try with the Key(HEX) or Key(Ascii) that you found using the application on your PC. Try both (the Hex and then the Ascii)

Please let me know if the issue is solved or not, so we can continue troubleshooting

Thank you

Thanks, XXXXX XXXXX several times. Still no go
Network Technician: Engineer John C., Networking Expert replied 8 years ago

That's weird, please don't get confused with the 0's (zeros) and o's (letter o)

Also, make sure you are entering the correct case (A is different than a)

And finally please check on the back of your router. Some Comcast routers have the wep key on the back or bottom.

Thank you

Thanks, John.

I did it several times and am sure I entered the number correctly; since the MAC has a feature that says "show password," I can see what I have typed. The router has a "Mac Address" on it in addition to serial number. I don't see anything labeled wep key.

Network Technician: Engineer John C., Networking Expert replied 8 years ago

We can reset the router to remove the password, then set a new one.

Please let me know the router model

Thank you

Thanks again, John.

Model is WRT54G

Bill

Network Technician: Engineer John C., Networking Expert replied 8 years ago

Ok, thank you

The router can be set to factory default by pressing the Reset button of the router. Pressing the Reset button on the back of the router for 30 seconds will reset your router to its factory default settings.

Please reset it, then (1) restart your computer and also (2) unplug / plug your router from the electricity outlet.

When you are online again please back with me to set the new password.

Please note that your wireless network name will be "linksys" now.

Thank you

Done it all, and both my PC and my Mac are connected to Linksys network. Is that OK? Should I be only on one or the other?
Network Technician: Engineer John C., Networking Expert replied 8 years ago

Ok, that's great!

Now we will need to set up a password XXXXX your network. So no other person can use your internet connection.

In order to setup WEP 128 bits (the best for your router) follow the steps below:

1- Click here ---> http://192.168.1.1

2- A new window will prompt for a User name and Password. Leave the User name field blank then enter your router’s password ("admin" is the default password, without the quotes), then click OK.

3- Follow steps 2 to 8 on following link:

Thank you Smile
