Hello,

My name is David.

It sounds like you are able to access the Advanced Boot Options menu that includes a command prompt option. If so then access the command prompt and run the following commands:

On the command prompt run the following commands:
BOOTREC /FIXMBR

and then press Enter.

Next run the following command:
BOOTREC /FIXBOOT

and then press Enter.
If any errors appear then run the following:
BOOTREC /RebuildBcd

Then reboot and test to see if the computer boots normally.

Please let me know the result.

I am creating a new repair drive now (the old one didn't give me the Advanced Boot Options anymore. I'll try now and let you know. Thank you
Customer reply replied 3 months ago
I have to create the repair drive from a full Windows machine (not a bootcamp one)
, is it OK?
Customer reply replied 3 months ago
Also, the Mac boot gives me the options between Windows boot and EFI Boot. Which one should I pick?
Customer reply replied 3 months ago
OK, I went through teh commands. First one got executed fine. Second one gave me "Access is Denied"
I typed the third one and it scanned the Windows installations then it said:
"Total identified Windows installations: 1
[1] C:\WINDOWS
Add installation to boot list? Yes(Y)/No(N)/All(A)"
I type Y then I get this answer:
"The requested system device cannot be found"
Customer reply replied 3 months ago
On reboot I get:
Your boot configuration data for your PC is missing or contains errors
File: \EFI\Boot\BCD
Error code: 0x000000f
Customer reply replied 3 months ago
doesn't access the EFI Boot anynore
Computer technician: syseng, Computer Hardware Engineer replied 3 months ago

Ok, just a moment...

Ask Your Own Computer Hardware Question
Computer technician: syseng, Computer Hardware Engineer replied 3 months ago

Ok then next select the command prompt again and run the following command:

chkdsk /b

and once the command completes restart and test to see if the issue is resolved.

I have to create a new recovery disk
This one doesn't give me the recovery dialogue anymore
Computer technician: syseng, Computer Hardware Engineer replied 3 months ago

Ok, then what procedure are you using to create the recovery disc?

Ask Your Own Computer Hardware Question
Customer reply replied 3 months ago
The Recovery Drive menu from Windows
Customer reply replied 3 months ago
The EFI Boot didn't work the second time after I used the MBR commands
Computer technician: syseng, Computer Hardware Engineer replied 3 months ago

Ok, then the issue is likely with the Bootcamp boot mechanism. So next do the following to boot into recovery mode and repair the partition:

Press and hold down the Command+R keys while booting the system.

Then Open Disk Utility

Choose the Mac partition that needs to be repaired (in this case the Bootcamp partition)

Click on Repair Partition to start the repair procedure.

Once complete try booting the Bootcamp partition and Windows.

Customer reply replied 3 months ago
Boot without recovery usb, right?
Computer technician: syseng, Computer Hardware Engineer replied 3 months ago

Yes, you have to boot into the the Mac OSX to run the procedure.

Ask Your Own Computer Hardware Question
Customer reply replied 3 months ago
Does the repair delete anything? I am doing it now
Customer reply replied 3 months ago
OK ... I only have Partition, Erase, Restore and Unmount options on the Bootcamp partition. First Aid is greyed out
Computer technician: syseng, Computer Hardware Engineer replied 3 months ago

Ok then if you can boot into the Mac partition, do that and then do the following:

Press Command+Space to open Spotlight search and type “Disk Utility” and press Enter.

In the Disk Utility application, select the disk or partition to check — which in this case is the system partition is named “Macintosh HD” by default — and then click the “First Aid” button.

Note that the First Aid function can run on an entire disk, or an individual partition depending on what you select.

Click “Run” and the Mac will check the disk selected for errors automatically fix any errors it finds.

After running the utility, restart the computer and test to see if the issues are resolved.

Ask Your Own Computer Hardware Question
Customer reply replied 3 months ago
Same for Macintosh HD - the First Aid is greyed out
It is only visible for a third partition called OS X Base
Customer reply replied 3 months ago
I created another recovery disk and try to run chkdsk /b
It says "Cannot lock the current drive
Chkdsk cannot run because the volume is in use by another process. Chkdsk may run if this volume is dismounted first. ALL OPENED HANDLES TO THIS VOLUME WOULD THEN BE INVALID. Would you like a force dismount on this volume (Y/N)
Computer technician: syseng, Computer Hardware Engineer replied 3 months ago

Good - select Y and press enter and let the scan run.

Ask Your Own Computer Hardware Question
Customer reply replied 3 months ago
Is the volume going to mount back at the next reboot?
Customer reply replied 3 months ago
OK, running it now
Customer reply replied 3 months ago
Will let you know the result in the AM. If by any chance it still doesn't boot, what else can I try?
I want to avoid reinstalling Windows from scratch
Computer technician: syseng, Computer Hardware Engineer replied 3 months ago

Yes, it should mount back and boot after the scan. If it does not work, then the next step will depend upon what happens and any errors that appear when it tries to boot.

Ask Your Own Computer Hardware Question
Customer reply replied 3 months ago
There were no errors found.
Still has the same problem when it boots - there is a short “Repairing Windows” message and then a flicker and it goes back in a loop
Computer technician: syseng, Computer Hardware Engineer replied 3 months ago

Go to Finder then select System Preferences.
Select Security and Privacy.
Then turn off File vault and wait 15 minutes for it to complete.
Next open Spotlight by clicking the magnifying glass icon in the upper right corner and type
disk utility
into Spotlight and press Enter and select Disk Utility from the search results.
In Disk Utility select the Macintosh HD drive and click First Aid near the top of the window to start First Aid.
Once completed test to see if the issue is resolved.

let me try
Customer reply replied 3 months ago
To turn the file vault off I need to decrypt - it says more than one day remaining
Computer technician: syseng, Computer Hardware Engineer replied 3 months ago

Ok thanks - please let me know the result.

Ask Your Own Computer Hardware Question
Computer technician: syseng, Computer Hardware Engineer replied 3 months ago

Let it continue to run - in some cases it takes much less time than the time estimate displayed.

Ask Your Own Computer Hardware Question
Customer reply replied 3 months ago
ok. once it finishes whic drive should i select again? Macintosh HD or Bootcamp?
Customer reply replied 3 months ago
I am just afraid that the previous version of windows boot info and restore info has been lost
Computer technician: syseng, Computer Hardware Engineer replied 3 months ago

Select the Macintosh HD drive this time.

The Windows boot and restore info should both be intact - the issue is Bootcamp boot sector corruption so that is what is being fixed.

Ask Your Own Computer Hardware Question
Customer reply replied 3 months ago
I had an older USb drive plugged in with an older verion of windows just before this happened - I might have selected to boot from that when the computer restarted and this might have replaced the restore info on my bootcamp drive - might not be the case but this is why I am asking
Computer technician: syseng, Computer Hardware Engineer replied 3 months ago

I understand, however it would not have replaced or changed any information on the Bootcamp drive without your confirmation so it is unlikely that that USB drive change anything on the Bootcamp partition.

Ask Your Own Computer Hardware Question

O, running First Aid now on Macintosh HD
Customer reply replied 3 months ago
finished (it was very fast):
volume /dev/rdisk1s1 appears to be OK
File system check exit code is 0
Customer reply replied 3 months ago
Rebooted, still in a loop ... Repeiring Windows message stays up for 1 second and then reboots
Computer technician: syseng, Computer Hardware Engineer replied 3 months ago

Ok, then next select the Bootcamp partition and run First Aid and let me know the result.

Ask Your Own Computer Hardware Question
Customer reply replied 3 months ago
That one is still greyed out
Customer reply replied 3 months ago
I am running fchkdsk /b again from the command prompt
Computer technician: syseng, Computer Hardware Engineer replied 3 months ago

Ok, then now that the partition is not encrypted, if chkdsk /f does not resolve the issue, go back into the Advanced Boot Options menu and select the Startup Repair option and restart when finished.

Ask Your Own Computer Hardware Question
Customer reply replied 3 months ago
will do once finished with chkdsk /b
Customer reply replied 3 months ago
gives me:
"Startup Repair couldn't repair your PC"
Computer technician: syseng, Computer Hardware Engineer replied 3 months ago

Ok then in the Advanced Boot Options command prompt run the following:

sfc /scannow

and press Enter. Let it scan and run and fix file corruption. Then reboot and let me know the result.

ok
Customer reply replied 3 months ago
Says: "Verification 100% complete
Windows Resource Protection could not perform the requested operation"
Computer technician: syseng, Computer Hardware Engineer replied 3 months ago

Ok then next run the same boot sector repair commands that were run earlier - they may resolve the issue now that the encryption has been removed:

On the command prompt run the following commands:
BOOTREC /FIXMBR

and then press Enter.

Next run the following command:
BOOTREC /FIXBOOT

and then press Enter.
If any errors appear then run the following:
BOOTREC /RebuildBcd

Then reboot and test to see if the computer boots normally.

same message after the third command:
"The requested system device cannot be found"
Computer technician: syseng, Computer Hardware Engineer replied 3 months ago

Ok, then try a reboot and see if there is any change in boot behavior.
