Hello how are you today? I will attempt to assist you with your boot trouble. What type of computer are you using?

Dell
Customer reply replied 7 months ago
It won't do anything. I'm on my phone
Computer technician: Harold Hanna, Engineer replied 7 months ago

Can you attempt going into the BIOS of your Dell computer? To do this, tap F2 while turning on the machine.

Ask Your Own Computer Hardware Question
Customer reply replied 7 months ago
Tap or hold f2?
Computer technician: Harold Hanna, Engineer replied 7 months ago

When the computer first starts to boot, you can tap F2 in attempt to log into the BIOS. This will be when the computer is first turned on.

Customer reply replied 7 months ago
Now it's a screen with only grey and royal colors.
Aptio setup utility - copyright (c)...etc
Computer technician: Harold Hanna, Engineer replied 7 months ago

Alright. What you are looking for is the hard drive options. It sounds as though your hard drive may have died, we can confirm this within the BIOS.

Ask Your Own Computer Hardware Question
Computer technician: Harold Hanna, Engineer replied 7 months ago

It may be under "System Information", or "Drives"

Ask Your Own Computer Hardware Question
Customer reply replied 7 months ago
Seeing:
Hard disk drivers
Cd/DVD rom drivers
Computer technician: Harold Hanna, Engineer replied 7 months ago

Alright. So under hard drive drives, does it have anything listed?

Ask Your Own Computer Hardware Question
Computer technician: Harold Hanna, Engineer replied 7 months ago

It will usually say something along the lines of a model number, and the size of the hard drive (in gigs/GB)

Ask Your Own Computer Hardware Question
Customer reply replied 7 months ago
Found system info
Name. Xps 2720Processor type. Intel(r) core tm

Computer technician: Harold Hanna, Engineer replied 7 months ago

Alright. When you were mentioning the hard drive and CDROMs, did it have anything listed there for either? Do you have a CDROM installed?

Ask Your Own Computer Hardware Question
Customer reply replied 7 months ago
Processor id 306c3

Computer technician: Harold Hanna, Engineer replied 7 months ago

Do you see anything more detailed listed for hard drives or CDROMs?

Ask Your Own Computer Hardware Question

Computer technician: Harold Hanna, Engineer replied 7 months ago

There is nothing under hard drive? From what you are seeing, it seems your hard drive may have died. Restart the computer, and instead of tapping F2, try taping F12. This should bring up Dell's Diagnostics. There should be an option there to test the hard drive.

Ask Your Own Computer Hardware Question
Customer reply replied 7 months ago
Boot mode is set to: Legacy; secure boot:off
Customer reply replied 7 months ago

Computer technician: Harold Hanna, Engineer replied 7 months ago

Alright. Please attempt restarting the computer, and tapping F12. Does it give you the option to enter Diagnostics?

Customer reply replied 7 months ago
ePsa pre-boot system assessment
Computer technician: Harold Hanna, Engineer replied 7 months ago

Great! What we are wanting is to test the hard drive it should tell you if the hard drive isn't detected. Unfortunately, I believe this will be the case. From what we've checked so far, it seems the hard drive has died. This will confirm that theory. If you are interested we can look into replacement hard drives after this is confirmed to no longer be working.

Did it give the option to do extensive testing on the hard drive?

Ask Your Own Computer Hardware Question
Customer reply replied 7 months ago
There's a box I can check:
Thorough Test Mode
Computer technician: Harold Hanna, Engineer replied 7 months ago

You could do that but it will take a while to complete. I would not do that now. Has it given you any errors?

Ask Your Own Computer Hardware Question
Customer reply replied 7 months ago
Not sure? I don't see anything that is saying that
Customer reply replied 7 months ago
Just said:
No problems have been found with this system so far. Do you want to run the remaining memory test??
Computer technician: Harold Hanna, Engineer replied 7 months ago

Are the diagnostics still running? If they are complete restart the computer and tap F12 again. We will explore the boot options. Let me know if there are any errors during this time.

Do not run the remaining memory test.

Ask Your Own Computer Hardware Question
Customer reply replied 7 months ago
It will take about 30 minutes
Customer reply replied 7 months ago
Do you want to continue? It recommended that I continue
Computer technician: Harold Hanna, Engineer replied 7 months ago

You don't need to continue. The type of memory it would be testing is not relevant to this error.

Ask Your Own Computer Hardware Question
Customer reply replied 7 months ago
Ok.
Computer technician: Harold Hanna, Engineer replied 7 months ago

So restart and tap F12. Let me know what it mentions as boot devices.

Ask Your Own Computer Hardware Question
Computer technician: Harold Hanna, Engineer replied 7 months ago

Very much thanks! The first one helped the most. What happens when you select the ST2000DM001

That's your hard drive. Is that when you get the original error?

Ask Your Own Computer Hardware Question
Customer reply replied 7 months ago
Goes back to this
Computer technician: Harold Hanna, Engineer replied 7 months ago

So with those photos, it looks more like the hard drive had a corruption/OS problem, rather than simply being a bad hard drive. There is still a chance it is going bad, but this points us to a slightly different direction. Do you hear any grinding or loud clicking sounds that you didn't notice before?

Ask Your Own Computer Hardware Question
Customer reply replied 7 months ago
I did awhile back, during testing
Customer reply replied 7 months ago
Not much though
Computer technician: Harold Hanna, Engineer replied 7 months ago

Do you remember what test it was when it was making sounds? The hard drive is at least partially working now, but it being on the way out could be why your boot partition is gone. A dying hard drive will typically make loud clinking or grinding sounds. This usually increases until the drive ultimately dies.

Ask Your Own Computer Hardware Question
Computer technician: Harold Hanna, Engineer replied 7 months ago

Alright. From here restart the computer, and tap F8. That should load up the Dell Recovery console. Let me know if it does that properly.

Ask Your Own Computer Hardware Question
Customer reply replied 7 months ago
It just goes back to that screen
Computer technician: Harold Hanna, Engineer replied 7 months ago

Does it not show you any recovery options when pressing F2, F8, or F12? Have you heard any more clicking, especially when it is attempting to read the hard drive (such as when attempting to boot Windows)

Ask Your Own Computer Hardware Question
Customer reply replied 7 months ago
No. It's just going to that screen
Computer technician: Harold Hanna, Engineer replied 7 months ago

Which screen specifically? You can turn the computer all the way off, then back on and attempt the F keys, if the computer is restarting too quickly.

Ask Your Own Computer Hardware Question
Customer reply replied 7 months ago
I'm just using the on /off button to reboot
Customer reply replied 7 months ago
It list f2 and f12 as options in the right corner
Computer technician: Harold Hanna, Engineer replied 7 months ago

Alright. As soon as you push it back on you can attempt tapping the F key, sometimes it is hard to catch it at the right time so tapping is preferred.

Ask Your Own Computer Hardware Question
Customer reply replied 7 months ago
Which f key?
Computer technician: Harold Hanna, Engineer replied 7 months ago

The F8 key is what normally brings up the recovery console, but you can try any of the other ones. We are looking for access to the recovery console to attempt reinstalling the Windows partition on the hard drive.

Ask Your Own Computer Hardware Question
Customer reply replied 7 months ago
F12 gets me here
Computer technician: Harold Hanna, Engineer replied 7 months ago

Did the computer come with any recovery CDs? Usually it is stored on the hard drive, but sometimes they will give you a CD/DVD also. If they did, we can attempt booting with that. At this point it seems that Windows will need to be reinstalled or at least repaired, and during that process if the hard drive is having any mechanical trouble it will likely be seen during the repair.

Ask Your Own Computer Hardware Question
Computer technician: Harold Hanna, Engineer replied 7 months ago

I know I haven't seen anything indicating the recovery console in the pictures you've sent so far. Did you get any DVD's with the computer? They may have given you a recovery disk.

Ask Your Own Computer Hardware Question
Customer reply replied 7 months ago
What's the logo /title the cds would be titled??
Computer technician: Harold Hanna, Engineer replied 7 months ago

Most likely

Dell Recovery

or maybe

Windows Recovery

Something to that effect. Since the hard drive has been having problems, it may have been on the HD and has gotten erased. If that is the case, you will have to reinstall Windows. That is likely needed to be done either way, but the other problem would be if it was a temporary hard drive problem, or if the hard drive is going bad. Keep an ear out for grinding or clicking that would indicate the HD getting worse. If you can't find any recovery CD's you can contact Dell about downloading the recovery DVDs. I have to step aside for a moment but will be back later this evening. There is not much more we can attempt without the recovery DVDs. I will answer any questions you have, but we are somewhat stuck depending if you can find the DVDs or not. If I have been helpful to you during this process, please rate my level of assistance from 1 to 5 stars!

I can't find the recovery cd's or dvds.
Is there a number I can call???
Computer technician: Harold Hanna, Engineer replied 7 months ago

I apologize for taking so long to see this question, for some reason it did not show up in my queue. The Dell contact number is(###) ###-####/p>

You can see if they can send you a recovery disk as the one on your hard drive seems damaged. If you hear any clicking like we discussed previously, you will want to look into a replacement hard drive as well.
