Hi, welcome and thank you for your question. My name is ***** ***** I am glad to assist you today.

I am very sorry about your issues. Can you please tell me what is this virtual CD ROM? How did you get this on the Mac?

Please let me know by replying to me here so that I can help you further.

Best regards,
Jess

The Virtual CDROM Media is a file in a Iomega disk that I can’t erase and is very annoying because always starts automatically. In it there are several files that I don’t use
Customer: replied 3 months ago.
No I’m sorry, I prefer to doit by myself
Expert:  Jess M. replied 3 months ago.

Thank you for writing back with that information. Do you already have a lot of personal files stored on this iOmega drive? I am asking because in order to remove this file, you can format the drive. This will erase everything

Customer: replied 3 months ago.
I try to reformat the disk with the disk utility in Mac to no avail. It answer that that file can not be erased
Expert:  Jess M. replied 3 months ago.

Do you have another computer like a Windows computer so that you can try to do the reformat there? There could be running programs from the disk that prevents the formatting to operate.

Customer: replied 3 months ago.
The problem is that the programs are for both kind of computers Mac and Win and in both cases I am not able to eliminate th Virtual CDROM Media
Expert:  Jess M. replied 3 months ago.

The solution here is to stop or close those running programs - the programs on the disk, before you do the formatting. On your Mac, when you insert the drive, those programs will start to run. You need to check those running programs and then "force quit" them and after that, please try to do the formatting.

No I prefer not I guess I am stuck with the Virtual CDROM Media. Probably I never will buy another Iomega Disk
Expert:  Jess M. replied 3 months ago.

If you have a Windows computer, I can do it for you

Customer: replied 3 months ago.
I have done that, I even have ejected the Virtual CDROM Media but still I can’t reformat
Customer: replied 3 months ago.
By the way the programs are a “gift” from Iomega they don’t run, what is running automatically is the Virtual CDROM Media showing those programs. So when I try to partition the disk that area doesn’t appear and if I try to format the partition with the Virtual CDROM Media is not touched
Expert:  Jess M. replied 3 months ago.

And that virtual service should be stopped so that you can reformat the drive.

Customer: replied 3 months ago.
How do I stop the virtual service?
Expert:  Jess M. replied 3 months ago.

Please try to connect that drive on a Windows computer then tell me when you are done.

Customer: replied 3 months ago.
It is not possible doit in Mac?
Expert:  Jess M. replied 3 months ago.

I have not done it on a Mac, but please give me a moment

Customer: replied 3 months ago.
OK I wait
Expert:  Jess M. replied 3 months ago.

Try these:

  • Open Disk Utility
  • Applications>Utilities>Disk Utility
  • Select the iOmega drive on the left that shows the capacity
  • Select the Partition tab on the right hand side of the Disk Utility Window
  • Select Partition Layout and select 1 partition
  • Next to name you will see untitled 1 where you can name the drive. This will be the name shown when the drive mounts.
  • Change Format to Mac OS Extended (Journaled)
  • Select Options.
  • Click on the GUID Partition Table radio button.

Tell me if you are still getting the formatting error

Customer: replied 3 months ago.
I have done all that and still I get the error
Expert:  Jess M. replied 3 months ago.

Please tell me the exact error message

Customer: replied 3 months ago.
It say that I can’t erase the partition with the programs
Expert:  Jess M. replied 3 months ago.

Please the exact error message and code if there is

Customer: replied 3 months ago.
After the size of the disk and how much much used space there is appears a message that say “you can not remove the first volume on the disk"
Customer: replied 3 months ago.
There is no code
Expert:  Jess M. replied 3 months ago.

Ok. What is the exact model of your iomega drive?

Customer: replied 3 months ago.
Sorry I lost the manual and the only info I got is that is an OEM Ext Hard Disk Media and nothing else, I lost the sticker in the disk
Customer: replied 3 months ago.
In the info tab it say that is not owners enabled neither can be verified nor repaired
Customer: replied 3 months ago.
By the way I have to leave the computer now, can I recover our conversation tomorrow?
Customer: replied 3 months ago.
OK then I leave and close the computer
Expert:  Jess M. replied 3 months ago.

Yes, we can resume with this tomorrow when you are back and available.
