My computer is getting power, but wont turn on. I thought

This answer was rated:

My computer is getting power, but won't turn on. I thought the hard drive might have gone, but when I opened the case the fan on the motherboard isn't working. Does that mean the motherboard went?

What is the make/model number of the computer ?

Also, when you press the power button, does the processor fan spins for a second and then stops Or it does not spin at all ?

Customer: replied 5 years ago.

Compaq cq5110f , amd athlon x2 7552 dual core processor

yes, the fan goes on then off

Please try to reset the hardware first. For that, you will need to disconnect power cables

Disconnect all the devices connected through USB ports. Also disconnect keyboard and mouse

Press and hold the power button for about 30 seconds and release power button

Wait for about two minutes

Only connect keyboard, do not connect mouse now

Reconnect power cables and try to turn on the system again

As you press the power button, let me know if the processor fan still spins for a second and then stops

Thanks. Now please check at the back of the system (where the power supply is connected)

Do you see a small LED there ?

If yes, when you try to turn on the system, does it blink repeatedly ?

Customer: replied 5 years ago.
Don't you have any LED on the back of the system on the power supply

OR, it does not blink ?

Customer: replied 5 years ago.
I have the light, it does not blink

It indicates that the power supply is working properly. Please use the following steps next to confirm about the exact problem (which can be a motherboard problem as it seems, but we need to absolutely make sure)

A Disconnect power cables

Locate CMOS battery on the motherboard and disconnect the same.

Wait for 5 minutes

Reconnect power cables (do not connect CMOS battery or drive cables)

Turn it back on

B If it fails, disconnect power cables

1 If any add-on cards are installed( like graphics card), take out the same. Take out all memory(RAM) modules

2 Disconnect drive power cables (the cables connected between power supply and drives- hard drive, CD drive)

3 Disconnect the data cables for the drive (the cables connected between motherboard and hard drive/ CD/DVD drive)

4 Disconnect and then reconnect motherboard power cables (power cables connected between power supply and motherboard). Usually there are two power connectors, one 20/24 pin and one 4 pin. Make sure that both connectors are securely connected

Try to turn it on again

If it fails, then unfortunately the problem is with motherboard. In that case you will need to replace motherboard

Customer: replied 5 years ago.
should I plug the keyboard and mouse when I turn it back on?
Not required, you can keep the keyboard and mouse unplugged and try to turn on the system. As you press the power button check processor fan again and see if it still doing the same thing (spin for a second or two and then stops)

If yes, and if you already tried all of the above, then you can also try to disconnect power cables

Take out processor heatsink/fan module and then take out the processor

Then re-install it and reinstall heatsink/fan module

Reconnect power cables and check again

If it remain same, then unfortunately the problem is with motherboard

OK what I thought.... do I have to replace with the same motherboard or are there compatible ones, can I use the Processor?
Yes, replacing with the same model number will be advisable to avoid any compatibility related problems. In very rare case, the processor become faulty. So you will be able to use the same processor.

I think the model number of the motherboard is M2N68-LA. You can also confirm this by looking at the motherboard. The model number is XXXXX printed on the motherboard itself.

You can use the following link to get a replacement

You may also try HP part store, but I think the price will be much higher

Sorry, one more question.... By unplugging everything how did that test if it was the processor?
You need to reseat the processor. That is take out and then re-install the processor. Re-install heatsink/fan module.

Then try to turn it on again

If the processor fan stil spins for a second and stops then it is a motherboard problem.

thanks I'll try that
