I have a tapping noise coming from one of my 1989 Corvette. It comes and it goes sometimes it stops when I put it in neutral and then comes back. I noticed when I was driving through a drive-thru that there was a lot of vibrating and shaking I was hearing from under the car as if it was the exhaust system. I'm hoping it's not a valve tapping but I don't know why I would come and go and stop when I shift in Gears or put it in neutral and then come back. Anyway I could check to see if it's a valve lifter tapping?

Hello. Welcome to Just Answer. Please allow me to assist you. This really sounds like you have valve lifter problems. A fast way to check is to have the oil changed and put the next grade of that is heavier than your current oil you are using. If the tapping diminishes a bit, you are probably looking at pulling the cam out and replacing lifters. If you have any questions, please reply. Please do take a moment to confirm you have received my input. Thanks!

What grade oil you recommend? Alsi, how do the lifters get like that? I havent put much mileage on the car.
I been using 10 40 oil

It depends on the quality of the cam and lifters. Some camshafts are soft and allows the lobes to wear. Same thing with the lifter faces that ride the cam. The main issue on low mileage cars with internal engine noises is what we call 'dry starts'. This is caused when all of the oil in the system drains back to the oil pan. Essentially, the engine is rotating on the startup without benefit of proper oil volume and pressure. This causes accelerated wear on the moving parts, especially the cam lobes, the lifters and sometime the rod and main bearings. I would stay with 10W40, but, add a quart of LUCAS OIL TREATMENT first, then top off with the oil (Non-Synthetic). See if this helps with noise reduction.
