thanks havent seen any answers yet but i am computer illerate.
cant time my 289 ford. Twisted oil pump drive into a pretzel on start up. replaced oil pump and dist. drive shaft. engine about an hour. timing set at 6 BTDC points 16 thousand. no dwell meter. cant get engine to start or run. Had a cou[ple of carb backfires. When #1 cylinder is TDC harmonic balancer timing marks about 30-35 degrees BTDC but cannot get enough movement in distributor to start and run. Assuming timing chain has jumped a cog.
I will be away from all communication for about 12 hours.
Appreciate all help myou d tried.

Hi .

I've attached a rebuild book for your engine which will show you how to set up the timing chain and timing shaft from the cam to distributor.

If you have a nylon cam sprocket these are known to strip teeth and cause your timing to jump this is what it looks like

with your engine .
