I have a 48 Chevy pickup with 3 speed on the column. The truck is stuck in first gear and the shift lever does not move freely between gears. It had shifted fine during my*****just prior to the problem

good afternoon my name is ***** ***** I will assist
it sounds like the shift rods are out of alignment. when the shift tube wears in the steering column, the rods can get out of alignment and lock up the shifting. you will need to open the hood and look where the rods connect to the shift tube and center them up. most likely you may be replacing the shift tube so this does not happen again.
