Any other suggestions?

Are you aware of the correct procedures when replacing a Generator & / or Voltage Regulator to match them?

No I am very unskilled at auto mech. but my son said he would help me he is a littli better than me I THINK

Classic Car Mechanic: Don - Mo Lurch, Classic Car Mechanic replied 6 years ago

thank you for the response.............

Whenever you replace the Generator or Regulator you need to "POLARIZE" the Components

To do this:

After ALL wiring is made & BEFORE you turn the Key on or start the car:
Disconnect the FIELD wire from the Regulator
"Momentarily" touch the FIELD wire to the "BAT" Terminal on the Regulator

This HAS to be done or you can burn up the Generator, Voltage Regulator & / or Battery

Thanks I will make sure he does that. how about anything else we might try and do you know how I can test the generator to see if its good? Who or where can I get a reman. or new if I need one?

Classic Car Mechanic: Don - Mo Lurch, Classic Car Mechanic replied 6 years ago

Once the Components are "Polarized", standard Voltage Test with a Volt meter should indicate any problems

Who or where can I get a reman. or new if I need one?

I would start Locally, as there are a number of Rebuilders that do Farm Equipment Generator Rebuilding
You Local Parts Store should also be able to tell you who Rebuilds
There are On-Line Reuilders & Replacement Generators, but Local would save you Time & Money

In 1964 my uncle gave me a 1956 olds convt. for graduation loved it. Came across this one 9 yrs ago and loved it so I HAVE HAD LOTS OF FUN WITH IT SINCE BUT NOW i dont trust it to drive until I GET THIS PROBLEM STRAIGHTENED OUT.

Classic Car Mechanic: Don - Mo Lurch, Classic Car Mechanic replied 6 years ago

I understand.....

You may want to Replace (or have rebuilt) the Generator, Voltage Regulator & Battery.
Be sure all the wiring is in good shape & ALL Grounds are clean & tight
"POLARIZE"

Then give it a try
