You may have had a 12 volt battery before that looks like a six volt battery for original reasons. When replacing the battery Im thinking you replaced it with a 6 volt which is supposed to be in the vehicle, but if the classic has been converted to a 12 volt system which most are now, you must only use a 12 volt battery for a 6 volt will draw twice the amperage causing wire and component damage.

Thanks,

Nick.

Does the post snap when you attach or when attempting to start?
Ask Your Own Classic Car Question
Customer reply replied 8 years ago

snapping - both pos & neg posts when attepting to charge battery.

when starter button contacts starter......... battery goes dead-

does not turn over starter.

Classic Car Mechanic: Bill Barrow, Classic Car Mechanic replied 8 years ago

Make sure the battery is charged with correct polarity by checking with digital voltmeter. Rare but occasionally they get charged backwards. Hooking up a backwards charged battery the correct way will do as described.

On the starter the main post in a model T starter is quite easily shorted if twisted even slightly. Use a regular battery and jumper cables to test off the vehicle. Do not spin but a second as the 12V can damage the 6V starter if spinning too fast. If you only get a strong arch then post has been shorted and must be corrected.
