Customer Question
2001 PT Cruiser, Driver side...
2001 PT Cruiser, Driver side brake light not working (tail light works), done the standard troubleshooting, i.e. replaced the bulb, checked the voltage with multimeter; 3 wire pigtail (female connector) from the car, had 12 volts on the black/yellow wire (tail light) and when depressing the brake pedal 12V on the white/tan wire. Bought a new Male connector (the socket the bulb plugs into) no effect. Went to a salvage yard and found two complete sets of pigtail and bulb sockets. Replaced the female 3 wire connector and used the new male bulb socket. Again no change, checked the voltage on the replacement pigtail/female connector, again 12V on the tail light and brake light (when pedal was pushed). Plugged in the male connector and checked the voltage on the 4 connector in the male connector (bulb socket) and had 12V on both tail and brake (when pedal was pushed)... Any ideas what might be the issue, I am thinking it might be a ground issue. Side note the Center and passenger brake lights do work.

Based on what you have told me, I do think that it may be a ground issue. Try back probing the ground terminal on the bulb connector / socket with a test wire. Then touch the other end of the test wire to chassis ground somewhere. Then see if the brake light will now come on. Let me know.

Hey Chris,
Sorry for the delay. I back probed the connector, to be sure i understand what i should do... I used a paperclip to stick into where the ground wire enters the insulation plug on the female connector pigtail and checked the voltage first to make sure the paperclip had a good comnection, it did. I then connected an alligator clip to the paperclip and the ran the other alligator clip to the rear hatch lock hoop at the bottom center of the hatch. No change, so i tried other possible grounds with no luck.... Bummer... Lol

Ok, if you use your 12 volt test light, do you have power on the White wire with the Tan tracer when stepping on the brakes?
