2003 pt cruiser 2.3 eng. 178,000 miles, has always started

Customer Question

2003 pt cruiser 2.3 eng. 178,000 miles, has always started on 2nd or 3rd turn of eng. Vehicle acted as though it flooded three months ago. After multiple turns of engine, it cranked and ran fine. Two weeks later, same thing except now it will not crank until engine has spun 19 to 20 times exactly. Car then cranks and runs fine until it is shut off. Eng. was not flooding, it was starving. It acts as if it is having to pull fuel all the way from the tank on each crank ( if that is possible). Also noticed cruise control failed at about the same time. I suspect fuel pump.

I need the 4 digit code which will be something like P0300. If your not able to do procedure in link you can have codes checked at your local parts store for free. Check codes and let me know, thanks.

Correction: code is 0340

This code usually means the camshaft position sensor has failed or sometimes the timing. I'd start by replacing camshaft position sensor since it is easy to replace and a pretty cheap part. Let me know if you have more questions or need replacement instructions. Thanks.
