Where does it bottom out, at the rear or front?

Did you replace the entire strut including the spring or just the strut cartridge because the cartridge is technically just like a shock absorber and supports no weight, it's the spring that supports the weight. Al the shock or strut cartridge does is help prevent bouncing.
