Hello and welcome to JustAnswer!
It sounds as if the latch pawl may have rotated back to the closed position with the door open. If this was the case then the pawl would hit when trying to close the door, it would feel very solid and would bounce back. The ajar switch is internal in the latch and if the pawl was closed then that would explain the ajar light not being on.
Take a look at the latch and I believe you will see the pawl has rotated to the closed position, not open and ready to accept the striker. If so then make sure the door is unlocked, insert a screwdriver into the area where the pawl would be wrapped around the striker. Have a helper pull the handle and pop the striker back to the open position with the screwdriver.

Did you make sure the door was unlocked before pulling the handle and trying to release the latch?
