Hello and welcome to JustAnswer!
The battery light comes on when charging voltage is either too high or too low. Most often it comes on because charging voltage is low, the most common cause of low charging system output is a failed alternator. This has been more of an issue with the 3.6 engine but can happen on any engine.
Other possible causes would be the powertrain control module, alternator wiring, cable and connection issues, or the battery.
The alternator hasn't been replaced? Do you know whether it's over or undercharged?
