Hello and welcome to JustAnswer!
Overheating can definitely be caused by the thermostat or a cooling fan issue depending on when the problem is happening, but a restricted radiator or cylinder head issue on an early 3.6 would be more likely. Cooling system corrosion in that period was an issue and there is a good chance the radiator is restricted.
If you remove the radiator cap do you see white buildup in the reservoir or the cap?
Is temperature only climbing at idle?
