Sorry to hear you're having issues with your Avalanche. To answer your question, the dealer will have the necessary diagnostic equipment to correctly connect to the modules in your Chevy. You will need a scan tool to retrieve fault codes to help you get a better idea of the problem.
Typically, the symptoms you are describing could be caused by a vacuum leak in the intake system or possibly a faulty fuel pump not putting enough fuel pressure. To accurately check for vacuum leaks you need a smoke tester machine. A fuel pressure tester is needed to confirm fuel pressure within range. All these tools are available at your local dealership.
