Do you have a digital volt meter and a test light so we can do some testing?

Ask Your Own Chevy Question
Customer reply replied 20 days ago
Yea I have a digital volt meter right now
Chevy Mechanic: kalamykid, Shop Owner/ Tech replied 20 days ago

Can you pull the ac relay out and locate pin 87 based on the diagram on the relay in the fuse box, unplug the compressor and find the dark green wire in the compressor plug and set your meter to ohms and see what the resistance is at each location to ground please?

Ask Your Own Chevy Question
Customer reply replied 20 days ago
1 ohm
Chevy Mechanic: kalamykid, Shop Owner/ Tech replied 20 days ago

On each end of the wire to ground? Or from one end to the other?

Ask Your Own Chevy Question
Customer reply replied 20 days ago
I need to check the black wire to ground then???
Chevy Mechanic: kalamykid, Shop Owner/ Tech replied 20 days ago

Yes hold your black lead to a good ground, then test each point : the relay pin for pin 87, and the green wire at the compressor with the compressor unplugged.

Ask Your Own Chevy Question
Customer reply replied 20 days ago
Black wire to battery ground (battery unplugged) .0 ohm
Green wire to relay pin 87 .1 ohm
Chevy Mechanic: kalamykid, Shop Owner/ Tech replied 20 days ago

You must have the battery connected to do this test.

Ask Your Own Chevy Question
Customer reply replied 20 days ago
Battery was unplugged I just went to the ground wire to the battery
Chevy Mechanic: kalamykid, Shop Owner/ Tech replied 20 days ago

To get a good test result, you must reconnect the battery.

Ask Your Own Chevy Question
Customer reply replied 20 days ago
I got .8 ohms
Chevy Mechanic: kalamykid, Shop Owner/ Tech replied 20 days ago

At both ends?

Ask Your Own Chevy Question
Customer reply replied 20 days ago
On the black ground wire to known good ground .8 ohms
Green wire to relay pin 87 .1 ohms
Chevy Mechanic: kalamykid, Shop Owner/ Tech replied 20 days ago

That is not what I asked you to do. I asked you to hold your black test lead for your meter to a good ground, and use your red lead to test pin 87 for the relay in the fuse box with the relay removed then test the green wire at the compressor with the red lead and tell me what your reading is for each of the two tests. Keep the black test lead on a good ground for each of these tests.

Why did you replace the field coil for the compressor?

Ask Your Own Chevy Question
Customer reply replied 20 days ago
It wasn't activating when I first got the truck so I replaced it and it started working intermittently I thought it was the hvac module and I replaced that today and all it does now is pop fuses on the a.c. clutch
Chevy Mechanic: kalamykid, Shop Owner/ Tech replied 20 days ago

Are you 100% sure that you tested the pin in the fuse box that matches pin 87 on the relay?

Ask Your Own Chevy Question
Customer reply replied 20 days ago
I retested and got OL
Chevy Mechanic: kalamykid, Shop Owner/ Tech replied 20 days ago

And when you tested the tow points together black test lead at pin 87, and red lead on the dark green wire at the ac plug, you got a reading of .1?

Ask Your Own Chevy Question

No
Chevy Mechanic: kalamykid, Shop Owner/ Tech replied 20 days ago

Put a new fuse in the ac fuse spot, unplug the compressor and start the engine and turn the ac on and see if the fuse blows again.

It didn't pop
Chevy Mechanic: kalamykid, Shop Owner/ Tech replied 20 days ago

That was what I was hopping for. The wires and relay are still good, but your new field coil is shorted out and you will need to replace it again.

I just checked the coil it's still reading .o ohms
Chevy Mechanic: kalamykid, Shop Owner/ Tech replied 20 days ago

That tells me that the coil is bad for sure. If you go from pin to pin on the coil, you should get a reading of 0.00 or less.

Ask Your Own Chevy Question
Customer reply replied 20 days ago
What ohm spec is it supposed to be??? Now I do have a question I had someone come help me last Friday they dropped my original 10 amp fuse and pit a 15 amp in its place and that was popped when I saw it today could to many amps cause it to have shorted the brand new coil
Chevy Mechanic: kalamykid, Shop Owner/ Tech replied 20 days ago

No. If it popped a 15 amp fuse then there is a direct short in the field coil. The 15 amp fuse can handle more power then a 10 amp can. The 10 amp fuse would pop even faster then the 15. Trust me the field coil is BAD.

Ask Your Own Chevy Question
Customer reply replied 20 days ago
I have another coil that reads 3.9 ohms would that work
Chevy Mechanic: kalamykid, Shop Owner/ Tech replied 20 days ago

Test each pin against the metal framing of the coil and see if any of them do not show OL. If they both show OL then yes you can use it.

Ask Your Own Chevy Question
Customer reply replied 20 days ago
I'm getting 300+kohm on the black and the same on the green lead
Chevy Mechanic: kalamykid, Shop Owner/ Tech replied 20 days ago

Then it should be ok.

Ask Your Own Chevy Question
Customer reply replied 20 days ago
Thank god!!!
Chevy Mechanic: kalamykid, Shop Owner/ Tech replied 20 days ago

Just to make sure, can you plug the other field coil up, start the engine and turn the ac on and see if the fuse blows? If it does not, hold a screw driver about 1 inch away from the top of the coil and see if it pulls the screw driver down to it?

Ask Your Own Chevy Question
Chevy Mechanic: kalamykid, Shop Owner/ Tech replied 20 days ago

Make sure to keep the coil away form the fan and anything that moves just in case it magnetizes and grabs what it can.
