Customer Question
My 1995 chevy k2500...

My 1995 chevy k2500 blows the IGN A fuse when the ignition is set to run position. Turning it to crank does nothing and then when it sits in run for a second, the fuse pops and the instrument lights go out. This truck has an aftermarket remote start.

Mechanic's Assistant: Do all the fuses have the correct amperage for the circuits they're in?

Yes

Mechanic's Assistant: What is the model of your '95 Chevy?

K2500 5.7

Mechanic's Assistant: Are you fixing your vehicle yourself? What have you tried so far?

I replaced the starter and that's about it. I've gone through about 3 fuses too

Mechanic's Assistant: Anything else you want the mechanic to know before I connect you?

It recently had new plugs, wires installed

You're talking about the 40A maxifuse, yes?

This circuit goes to the ignition switch, then when you set the switch to RUN, it feeds various fuses and also goes directly to P/N switch.

Whatever is opening the fuse is drawing more than 40A of juice. If it was something downstream of one of the other fuses (that have lower ratings than 40A) it would open those fuses first, so for this reason, I am not worried about all of those other circuits. I primarily notice that the P/N switch has no fuse in the circuit, it's a yellow wire that goes from ignition switch to P/N. I would unplug the P/N switch and see if the fuse still opens. If not, put a new P/N switch in. If it does still burn the fuse, then we'll have to start looking in the column and other places, but I would start with P/N. While you're there, put your eyes on this yellow wire and see if it's chafed, cut, touching ground, etc. as far as you can see it.

I disconnected the switch and put a 30A fuse in, then cranked it. fuse is good. I'll try a new switch tomorrow.

New switch, same problem. It's really looking to me like it's a remote starter issue.
Chevy Mechanic: Jerry Newton, Chevy Technician replied 5 months ago

I don't know how that yellow wire is plumbed into the remote starter, but I'd have to agree. Remove that device and see if the problem goes away.

I didn't know you had a remote start, I would have started my search there, if I had known. Those things are not very high quality, and they end up giving lots of problems down the road.
