Mechanic's Assistant: Have you changed a battery before?

Only thing odd is the dashboard message "service theft deterrent system" warning light No, but tested the battery and it is ok

Mechanic's Assistant: What is the model/year of your Chevy?

2012 Silverado 1500

I think this truck has an immobilizer, so if the key has been changed, and not programmed, it won't start. I've run into this enough times that it is one of my first questions. You may want to touch base with the customer sooner than later, to see what lead up to the no start...

Have you scanned all the modules for codes? I think the verus will do that - ECM, BCM, TDM, etc

We've asked them if they gave us the right key, to which they said "yes". Let me ask them if the key was changed recently.

It is an RFID system, like putting a chip in the cat or dog... The security system has to see the right answer from the chip in the key, otherwise, the secret handshake doesn't happen, and the vehicle won't run...

Sometimes it is just a waiting game - like 30 minutes to reset it, or you could disconnect the battery...

I'm looking for more fuses to check, and it could be an ignition switch issue too, especially if this rig has big miles, but I'm not ready to condemn any components yet

ok - I'm still seeking fuses, but this cam across my radar too -

Condition/Concern

A customer may comment on any of the following complaints:

  • Intermittent no crank
  • Intermittent no start, or start and stall
  • Security / Theft light / Message
  • Poor or no RKE range
  • Keyless or passive entry/start inoperative
  • No Fob Detected message
  • Service Tire Pressure Monitor message
  • Any of the following DTC's: B3055, B3060, B3935, C0750, C0755, C0760, C0765, and/or C0775.

Note: On vehicles equipped with keyless/passive start, the vehicle will start if the fob is placed in the fob pocket.

In most cases, these concerns cannot be duplicated.

The above systems use Radio Frequency (RF) to transmit information. Some aftermarket devices cause Radio Frequency Interference (RFI), which can "jam" the radio frequency being transmitted.

Listed below are a number of aftermarket devices that can cause RFI. In many cases, these types of devices will be attached to the customer's key ring and could be removed from the key ring or from inside the vehicle when the customer drops the vehicle off for service.

  • Vehicle immobilizer keys from other vehicles
  • Keyless access transmitters from other vehicles
  • Interstate/bridge toll passes
  • Gate/door passes to allow access to pools, driveways, entry doors, etc.
  • Community/parking access cards
  • Fuel station speed passes
  • Building access swipe cards/ transponder devices
