Dash light came on saying AC off due to motor running hot.

Customer Question
Dash light came on...

Dash light came on saying AC off due to motor running hot . Also when I turn off the motor the fan comes on and runs for 5 min. Heat gauge not working either ( sits on cold )

Mechanic's Assistant: Have you checked the fuses? The dashboard bulbs?

Forgot to tell you . My car is a 2013 Chevy Malibu

Mechanic's Assistant: Are you fixing your MINI yourself? What have you tried so far?

The motor in 2013 Malibu runs hot . AC off light came “on” and temp gauge went cold . Topped up coolant (no very much was needed). I noticed that when I turn off the motor the fan runs for 5 min or so . What could be the problem ?

This usually means the thermostat has failed. When vehicle detects vehicle is taking too long to warm up it automatically goes into overheat mode to be safe. I'd recommend replacing thermostat with OEM AC Delco brand and then after replacing have diagnostic codes reset. To have this done at a shop would be around a $200 job. My goal is to provide 5 star service so please let me know if you have any questions, thanks.

A mechanic fried has checked for leaks , thermostat , water pump , the coolant seems to go down only when driving . He replaced the battery ( It was 5 years old ) He is now replacing a sensor which controls gauges . It couldn't be the alternator ? It checks out good on charging rate .

The Coolant temp sensor or thermostat are the most likely causes but thermostat is problem about 90% of time and sensor about 10%. I would recommend replacing thermostat with OEM part even if it is testing good, with this type of failure the thermostat can be hard to accurately test. Let me know if you have more questions, thanks.
