Chevy Mechanic: Gary, Chevy Technician replied 1 month ago

the engine will physically crank over and not fire up ?

Ask Your Own Chevy Question
Customer reply replied 1 month ago
Correct
Chevy Mechanic: Gary, Chevy Technician replied 1 month ago

can you see if the engine will somewhat run on starting fluid or carb cleaner being sprayed into the throttle body opening ?

we need to see if its missing spark or fuel

Ask Your Own Chevy Question
Customer reply replied 1 month ago
Sprayed starter fluid in. That didn't do any good. Sounded the same.
I alone so I can't tell if I have spark. No one to turn the key
Chevy Mechanic: Gary, Chevy Technician replied 1 month ago

we have to be sure what we are missing

until you get a helper disconnect both battery cables for 5 minutes then touch the 2 cables together for 1 minute then reconnect them to the battery will it still not start ?

Ask Your Own Chevy Question
Customer reply replied 1 month ago
Ok. I did that. Still won't start
Chevy Mechanic: Gary, Chevy Technician replied 1 month ago

ok we need to see if it is getting spark next

and it was doing this before you changed the crank sensor ?

Ask Your Own Chevy Question
Customer reply replied 1 month ago
No. It was running and starting with no problem before the battery died
Chevy Mechanic: Gary, Chevy Technician replied 1 month ago

can you be sure all the fuses in the underhood fuse box are good

if they are then we need to see if we have spark next

Ask Your Own Chevy Question
Customer reply replied 1 month ago
No spark. I rigged up a string to turn the key.
Put a screw driver in the coil and had the plug close. No arching at all
Chevy Mechanic: Gary, Chevy Technician replied 1 month ago

we need to test the crank sensor 3 wires next

with the key ON one wire should be 12 volts and one should be a good ground

Ask Your Own Chevy Question
Customer reply replied 1 month ago
What about the 3rd wire?
Chevy Mechanic: Gary, Chevy Technician replied 1 month ago

we will test that if we need too

now also when you pull the starter out it is very tight between the starter and the crank sensor be sure the connector is not unplugged on the crank sensor or that any of the crank sensor wires are damaged at all

Ask Your Own Chevy Question
Customer reply replied 1 month ago
I know. I changed that sensor this morning. Not fun.
Chevy Mechanic: Gary, Chevy Technician replied 1 month ago

double check the wiring then test power and a ground

Ask Your Own Chevy Question
Customer reply replied 1 month ago
I have 12 volts on one and seems to be a good ground on the other 2
Chevy Mechanic: Gary, Chevy Technician replied 1 month ago

be 100 % sure the wiring looks good at the crank sensor if it does then this issue is more than likely a bad computer

Ask Your Own Chevy Question
Customer reply replied 1 month ago
It looks fine. The main computer?
Chevy Mechanic: Gary, Chevy Technician replied 1 month ago

if all the fuses look good the odds are that is bad yes the engine computer but to be 100 % sure a scan tool needs to be connected to the truck to check for data and see if you can communicate with the computer and see crank RPM

Hi Im David, are you getting rpms while cranking the engine?

Ask Your Own Chevy Question
Customer reply replied 1 month ago
The rpm won't register until the engine has started. I have another truck just like it. That's how I know. While cranking the cluster is off. Once running the cluster registers
Chevy Mechanic: david craig, Auto Mechanic replied 1 month ago

ok, have you tested for a signal coming out of the crank sensor?

Ask Your Own Chevy Question
Chevy Mechanic: david craig, Auto Mechanic replied 1 month ago

having ground on the signal wire doesnt mean anything. you need to test it while the engine is cranking

Ask Your Own Chevy Question
Chevy Mechanic: david craig, Auto Mechanic replied 1 month ago

do you have a scope?

Ask Your Own Chevy Question
Customer reply replied 1 month ago
I asked him about that. He didn't get back to me about that. I don't have a scope.I installed a new crank sensor.
I swapped the computer from my other suburban. It's not that. Bad truck computer started my good truck. Good truck computer wouldn't start the bad truck.
Chevy Mechanic: david craig, Auto Mechanic replied 1 month ago

im not suggesting the computer is bad. i just want to see waht kind of signal is coming out of the sensor. it could be the wire

Ask Your Own Chevy Question
Customer reply replied 1 month ago
I know. Just saying the other guy suggested that it was the computer
Customer reply replied 1 month ago
How would I test the wires from the sensor?
Chevy Mechanic: david craig, Auto Mechanic replied 1 month ago

back probe the dark blu/white wire while cranking and set the meter on ac volts

Ask Your Own Chevy Question
Customer reply replied 1 month ago
Not impossible to do. But it's only me and it's 20 degrees.
Customer reply replied 1 month ago
I've changed crank and cam sensor. Throttle possible sensor. It's not the computer. Can you advise what would be next if it was the wires at the crank sensor
Chevy Mechanic: david craig, Auto Mechanic replied 1 month ago

not sure what you mean what would be next if it was the wires?

i gotta get home. ill be back on in about an hour. this shop is driving me nuts today.

Ask Your Own Chevy Question
Customer reply replied 1 month ago
You said to check the wires and set it to ac. If I did that and found there to be an issue what would be the next step ?
This whole thing is odd. It was fine before the battery died. Now I have a charge and it won't start. I feel like it must be something stupid since I've done everything else.
Chevy Mechanic: david craig, Auto Mechanic replied 1 month ago

if you don't have ac voltage on the signal wire then the sensor is bad. I know its new. I just want to verify it there

Ask Your Own Chevy Question
Customer reply replied 1 month ago
Oh ok. I can't think of anything else other than a broken wire in the harness
Chevy Mechanic: david craig, Auto Mechanic replied 1 month ago

if theres a signal then we will need to do a continuity test of the signal wire to the pcm
