How long does it take after starting a cold engine for the gauge to read hot?

What engine is this?

Ask Your Own Chevy Question
Customer reply replied 10 months ago
driving maybe 10 to 15 minutes with gauge reading normal, gauge goes to full hot and engine dies. The thermostat has been changed along with the water pump. the engine is a 350 V-8.
Chevy Mechanic: Mike S., Chevy Mechanic replied 10 months ago

It sounds like there is something wrong with the wiring or and/or instrument cluster. Since it has a carburetor, it must somehow be shutting down the ignition. Let me take a look over the wiring diagram and see if there is anyway that it can possibly even do that.

Would you happen to have a tachometer on that vehicle or even a hand held one?

Customer reply replied 10 months ago
It's my grandson's truck and I'm at work , I don't know if there is an in-dash tach., but I do have a hand held
Chevy Mechanic: Mike S., Chevy Mechanic replied 10 months ago

Ok, when you get home see if when using the hand held tach if while the gauge is rising to hot or while the engine is stalling or even afterward if it won't start back up if there is a rpm. Of course the cranking rpm will only be around 100 while the running 1,000 roughly or more
