05 EQUINOX HAS NO SPARK ON CYL 2 AND 5. THE OWNER OF THE CAR…

Customer Question
05 EQUINOX HAS NO...

05 EQUINOX HAS NO SPARK ON CYL 2 AND 5. THE OWNER OF THE CAR REPLACED THE COIL AND SAME ISSUE. MY QUESTION IS CAN THE CRANKSHAFT SENSOR CAUSE JUST THE TWO CYLS. TO FAIL? ALSO, MASS AIR FLOW SENSOR DOES NOT HAVE ANY AFFECT ON CYL. FIRING DOES IT?

Mechanic's Assistant: Does the vehicle stall at low speeds? Does it sputter?

YES. I BELIEVE IT HAS HAD A ENGINE INSTALLED RECENTLY. THE GUY JUST BAUGHT THE CAR THE WAY IT IS. ANY HOW, THE FACTORY COIL PACK PLUG HAS BEEN REPLACED WITH ANOTHER THAT WIRE COLORS DONT MATCH EXACT.. IM ASSUMING WHOEVER DID THE REPAIR KNEW HOW TO RELACE THE PLUG. BUT YES IT DOES RUN ROUGH AT IDLE, NO SPARK FROM THE TWO CYLS. IT CLEARS UP ON HWY.

Mechanic's Assistant: Are you fixing your Equinox yourself? What have you tried so far?

I VERIFIED A NO SPARK ISSUE ON CYL 2 AND 5. I ALSO AM CURIOUS IF THE CRANK SENSOR IS NEWER THAN THE PCM IN CAR WILL THAT THROW IGNITION FIRING OUT OF WHACK?

Mechanic's Assistant: Anything else you want the mechanic to know before I connect you?

IS HE INTERESTED IN BUYING AN 05 EQUINOX

The crank sensor could cause this problem but unlikely. Next step is to verify coils have good power/ground and if so verify signal wire between coil and PCM is good, if all is good then replace crank sensor. If problem still exists replace the PCM which is the most likely cause. Let me know if you have more questions, thanks.

is there a signal wire per cyl or just one overall? seeings how the car does run, im assuming if only one signal wire then yes there is signal between coil and pcm. if
Chevy Mechanic: Dan, Technician replied 8 months ago

This vehicle has a little different setup then I thought, I was thinking of the later model. The most likely cause is the ignition coil, there are 3 control wires, each wire controls 2 cylinders. So make sure coil wires are good, each one should have under 5 ohms resistance between ignition module and PCM, if good replace ignition module. Your local parts store can also test the ignition module, here is a wiring diagram to help with testing. Let me know if you have questions. Thanks.

the owner replaced module assy with another known good. still same problem with same cyls. the plug was replaced with another wich the wire colors dont match but im hoping they they wired it correctly. can the cps affect only two cyls?
Chevy Mechanic: Dan, Technician replied 8 months ago

It can effect only 2 cylinders but pretty unlikely, next step is to check control wires. Manual does not specify which wire is for those 2 cylinders so just test them all. Most likely cause is wiring, 2nd most likely cause is PCM, and 3rd would be crank sensor. Let me know if you have more questions, thanks.

are you available any time today? i will start working on this again about 10 am. you sound very knowledgable and i appreciate your help.
Chevy Mechanic: Dan, Technician replied 8 months ago

I'll be available most of the day, I do have a few things to do so may be away from computer from around 10am until 2pm but will reply after that. Check resistance of those 3 control wires and I'm pretty sure you will find the problem if not let me know and I'll reply asap. Thanks.
