Customer Question
recently changed all 8 injectors...
I have a 2003 Chevy 2500 HD with the 6.6L Duramax. I recently changed all 8 injectors. About a week after changing them my temp gauge started acting erratic. I changed the temp sensor and all was fine for two weeks. Now it bounces and gives the error message on the display that "engine coolant hot" and "engine overheated". This is immediately after starting the engine from sitting overnight. I checked the resistance at the coolant temp sensor last night and got 420 ohms. Seems good to me. What next?

Welcome, I'm Chris (aka Moose).

  • Although I work here everyday, please understand it is not all day and rarely morning time.
  • To get the most from me and the best experience, please give me the best details you can.
  • The website will offer you a phone call option for more $$. Some I do fulfill and some I do not.
  • Thanks, let's get started. If I upload dropbox links, without the app use the box in the top right for direct download.

If you back probe and monitor your coolant sensor resistance once started cold. Is the reading jumping all over or gradually changing as the engine heats up?

Jumping all over. I have codes P0117, P0118, and P0181. The truck surges at idle about 100 RPM's. I don't really notice it driving unless I'm cruising at about 55-60 and then I can feel it still trying to surge. Only does it until it would be normally warm.
Chevy Mechanic: Chris (aka-Moose), Technician replied 10 months ago

At this time the test points to either an air pocket in the cooling system that is around the sensor causing this crazy fluctuation or this new sensor is to bad. Can you attempt a cooling system bleed and warranty out the new sensor before we do more. Are the diag steps for those codes needed?

Now that I have posted a partial or complete answer, you will see you can rate me. The deposit you have already paid is not transferred to me until you rate me. I would like to receive nothing less than 5 star excellent ratings. So if we are not there yet, please reply and let me help more. If you're not pleased, let me know because rating bad does not result in a refund, there are better options. Rating now will not close this post nor prevent replying. Thanks Chris

I have bleed the system many times and replaced the sensor with another new one this morning. The problem is still occurring.
Chevy Mechanic: Chris (aka-Moose), Technician replied 10 months ago

When you got that up and down readings from the sensor was that when plugged up or at the harness with it unplugged?

Plugged up
Chevy Mechanic: Chris (aka-Moose), Technician replied 10 months ago

Try it unplugged to see if the wires to the sensor are not maintaining reference voltage.
