I have 2001 Chevy S10 4.3 it scans P0440 Evap, I do smell some fuel near that area.
I replace the valve under the hood and the check engine light turned off.
2 weeks later check engine light came on again showing the code P0440

Hi, I'm Ron and I will be helping you today.
Stand by for a moment while I prepare your answer.

We use a smoke machine to find EVAP leaks, you need to use one too. Also you need to use a scan tool to run all of the EVAP tests.

Please understand that I don't know your skill level or tools you
have to assist us. Also understand that I can't see, smell, hear, or
touch the vehicle either, so your patience is appreciated. JA is a
great Q/A site, but it does not replace a repair shop. So please
don’t shoot the messenger if I have to deliver bad news:)
If you are satisfied with my answer, I would greatly appreciate a 5
star rating now and I will still assist you after you have rated me
too if another question pops up. I don’t get credit for helping you
until you rate me.
Thanks again, Ron

Did you have any more questions for me at this time?

Thanks again, Ron

Hi Ron...don't have smoke machine or a scan tool. I was hoping there was another way to narrow down this code.

I replace the warned out factory tube that connects to the valve under the hood and put on a new GM gas cap

This HAS to be done, there's no magic here. Most parts stores will loan you these tools for a deposit and I am ready to be rated 5 stars now. 1/6 is terrible.

Thanks again, Ron

I will look under the truck again to see anything obvious did not see anything earlier. Again this truck is very clean with 53,000 miles

This HAS to be done, there's no magic here. Most parts stores will loan you these tools for a deposit and I am ready to be rated 5 stars now for more assistance

Thanks again, Ron

I believe the only things left is the purge solenoid, Vent valve and the canister itself

Perhaps you can consult with your staff?

Perhaps you can do the tests I said to do. We are a PAY site too

See attachment.

So did you have any more questions for me at this time?

Thanks again, Ron

Our goal here is to assist you in the repair of your vehicle by
supplying you with well educated information. We may not always
have the exact fix you wanted to hear, but our job is to get you on
the right track, which we always do. We can’t hear, see, smell or
touch your vehicle from where we’re at, so your understanding of
that is greatly appreciated. There are no magical or miraculous
answers, but we do our best to guide you in the right direction.
Thanks, Ron
