I have recently purchased a 1984 corvette. The car ran fine

Customer Question

I have recently purchased a 1984 corvette. The car ran fine for the first 2 weeks, though I noticed while driving I heard the door locks locking and unlocking. Yesterday I attempted to use my toy, once started I turned on the AC, then the radio, after a couple of minutes running I pressed the brake to shift to reverse and the car lost power (the dash went dark)and died. Now I have no dash, radio, etc. the courtesy lights work, and the horn works but that's about it. Before I go digging around in the security system or worse the electrical system, I was hoping to get some advise on a direction to turn. Thanks for your assistance, Rich

Hi, I'm Ron and I will be helping you today.
Stand by for a moment while I prepare your answer.

Here's the first thing you want to do before getting into security systems. I attached a re-learn procedure for you to try.

Please understand that I don't know your skill level or tools you
have to assist us. Also understand that I can't see, smell, hear, or
touch the vehicle either, so your patience is appreciated. JA is a
great Q/A site, but it does not replace a repair shop. So please
don’t shoot the messenger if I have to deliver bad news:)
If you are satisfied with my answer, I would greatly appreciate a 5
star rating now and I will still assist you after you have rated me
too if another question pops up. I don’t get credit for helping you
until you rate me.
Thanks again, Ron

Did you have any more questions for me at this time?

Thanks again, Ron

I tried the "re-learn" procedure, upon reconnecting the battery I still have no dash, radio, etc when the key is on, courtesy lights, horn and headlights work........nothing else

Okay, that was the first step to confirm if it was security related or not.

Now we know that we need to test each system independently and what may be shared by the same wiring harness and fuses.

Thanks again and please remember to rate me 5 stars now and keep
this link in case you need me again later on.
I don’t get credit for assisting you until you rate me

Our goal here is to assist you in the repair of your vehicle by
supplying you with well educated information. We may not always
have the exact fix you wanted to hear, but our job is to get you on
the right track, which we always do. We can’t hear, see, smell or
touch your vehicle from where we’re at, so your understanding of
that is greatly appreciated. There are no magical or miraculous
answers, but we do our best to guide you in the right direction.
Thanks, Ron

I guess I am looking for a common power source which would supply the ignition switch (dash lights, radio, etc) , and power door locks ( I hear the relay click, but the actuators don't operate). and how that might be affected by applying the brakes ( brake lights ?) Could it be a fuseable link? Is there a Main fuse / circuit breaker? Everything seemed fine until I pressed on the brake pedal.

You will need to attach a scan tool to the computer and do bidirectional tests to assist in finding this issue. I wish ALL problems that customers had were simple, but they're not.

Please don't jet any bad news I had to give you affect my 5 star rating. I have tried helping you all the way.

Thanks, Ron
