Customer Question

Hi, 2004 silverado ran a little hot (never into the red) but enough for me to notice. As i was stopping to get coolant, noticed a louder blowing noise coming from under the hood. I shut off the truck and smelt burning rubber. Put new coolant in, went to start it. The truck cranked a couple times but did not start.

Hello and welcome!

My name isCustomerand I can assist you with your question.

Does the engine crank over and not start or does it not crank over at all?

Have you checked for codes in the computer?

Expert:  AMEDEE replied 10 months ago.

What size engine do you have?

Customer: replied 10 months ago.
It does crank over, I believe it is a 5.3 but i am not sure. It is a v8. I have not checked the codes.
Expert:  AMEDEE replied 10 months ago.

Ok no problem. Have you checked for spark and or fuel?

Customer: replied 10 months ago.
I have not, I am not super mechanically skilled. Mostly worried that my engine has seized.
Expert:  AMEDEE replied 10 months ago.

If the engine is cranking, then no, the engine is not seized

Expert:  AMEDEE replied 10 months ago.

Are there any anti theft or security lights on or flashing on the dash?

Customer: replied 10 months ago.
It cranked a couple of times the first time I tried to start it, maybe cranked once the second time, and now barely makes a sound.
Customer: replied 10 months ago.
No, there is a check engine but honestly that things been up for a while.
Expert:  AMEDEE replied 10 months ago.

Got it.. so it does have a hard time cranking. Ok, then yes, it is possible the engine is starting to lock up. Have you checked the oil level and condition?

Customer: replied 10 months ago.
the oil level looks fine, I did not necessarily check the condition.
Expert:  AMEDEE replied 10 months ago.

Ok, it is possible that the starter motor is bad or the battery may be bad causing this condition. You would need to rotate the engine over by hand to see if the engine is has locked up. It is not hard to do. If this checks out good, I would suspect bad battery or starter motor.

Customer: replied 10 months ago.
How do i rotate it by hand?
Expert:  AMEDEE replied 10 months ago.

There is a bolt in the center of the crankshaft pulley (the big one at the bottom). You would need to put a socket or wrench on this bolt and turn the engine.
