Customer Question
I HAVE A 71 CHEVELLE...
I HAVE A 71 CHEVELLE WITH A 1990-91 MARK IV 454 IN IT. WHEN I PURCHASED IT IT WOULD OVERHEAT. I CHANDED THE CARB, INTAKE MANIFOLD, WATERPUMP, NEW GRIFFEN ALUM RADIATOR, FAN AND SHROULD.I ALSO ADDED AC FROM VINTAGE AIR. IT RUNS NOW AT ABOUT 180 DEGREES, HOWEVER IF IT IDLES FOR TEN MINUTES OR SO IT GOES UP TO ABOUT 220 DEGREES.IT DOES NOT BOIL OVER. I WAS THINKING OF ADDING AN DUAL ELECTRIC FAN KIT SUCH AS FROM DERALE HIGH OUTPUT DUAL RAD FAN AND SHROUD KIT, 2-12" FANS, 7 BLADES SUMMIT PART NUMBER DER-16837. I DID NOTICE THE SHROUD ON THE RADIATOR HAS A 21" OPENING AND THE FAN IS 17". WOULD CHANGING THE FAN TO A 19" FAN MAKE A DIFFERENCE
JA: Has the vehicle ever overheated? And when was it last serviced?
Customer: IT DID WHEN I FIRST BOUGHT IT. I SHUT IT DOWN IMMEDIATLY IT WAS SERVICED LESS THAN A COUPLE HUNDRED MILES AGO.
JA: What is the model of your '2147481646 Chevy?
Customer: ITS A 71 CHEVELLE VIN 136371B238643 WITRH A MARK IV 1990-91 454 BLOCK # 10069286
JA: Are you hoping to fix this yourself? What have you tried so far?
Customer: PERHAPS YES DEPENDING ON WHATS NEEDED. THE RADIATOR I PUT IN IS A GRIFFIN ALUMINUM RADIATOR GRII-8-7008, NEW SHROUD' 17 INCH FAN' , 180 DEGREE THERMOSTAT, NEW HOSES ETC. AS I SAID THE OPENING IN THE SHROULD IS 21 INCHS WITH A 17 INCH FAN. DOES THAT MAKE A DIFFERENT
JA: Anything else you think the mechanic should know?
Customer: AS I SAID I CHANGED THE CARB, INTAKE MANIFOLD, WATER PUMP,HOSES, THERMOSTAT, FAN, RADIATOR

Hi there,

I would try the 19 inch fan as the first option.

Is this a viscous coupled or fixed fan?

The twin electric fans with low high digital control would be the next step.

FIXED FAN
Chevy Mechanic: Gary, ASE Certified Technician replied 1 year ago

The 19 would fit the shroud better.

The 17 would not pull air as well as it could because of the gap within a 21 shroud.

The 19 is a step in the right direction.

As long as it a staggered blade set to be quiet.

Watch the blades if you are working on a running engine.
