Customer Question

The starter is not engaging when it is turned on. Happens about 1/2 the time. Bendix?
JA: When you turn the key, do you get a single loud click, or a series of rapid ones?
Customer: Oh, the starter turns, it just does not engage the flywheel.
JA: What is the model/year of your Chevy?
Customer: 97 3/4 ton extended cab pickup
JA: What year is your Cab?
Customer: 97
JA: Are you hoping to fix this yourself? What have you tried so far?
Customer: myself - understand I probably need to replace the starter with a rebuilt unit.
JA: Anything else you think the mechanic should know?
Customer: not sure..

Hi, welcome to Just Answer. I’m Ron and I’ll be helping you
Before we get started though, Please understand that I don't know
your skill level or tools you have to assist us. Also understand that
I can't see, smell, hear, or touch the vehicle either, so patience is
appreciated. JA is a great Q/A site, but it does NOT replace a
repair shop.
My goal is to make you happy and get a great rating in return for
my time. Sometimes I have to give you bad news that I know you
didn’t want to hear, so please don’t shoot the messenger.

The most common problem is the bendix or drive from the starter. Doesn't matter though, either way you need a starter. Hopefully the rebuilt one works good. I would go new if you could.

Thanks, Ron
