Customer Question

Just bought an 89 corvette with 63K miles. I have a rough and irratic unsteady idle. RPMs go up and down when idling, from like 6K to 9K RPMs. Also a very strong smell of exhaust fumes after starting it. I changed plugs and wires but no change with idle problem and exhaust smell. What else can I do or change?

Hi There, I'm Clayso a certified master automobile technician with 30 years of automotive repair and diagnostic experience.

From your description sounds like a leaking fuel pressure regulator. Have the fuel pressure checked, it should stay at about 40.5 - 47 psi after the ignition is turned off. Make sure there is no fuel in the regulators vacuum line. Also check the resistance of the injectors at 70°F, they should be 16Ω. Let me know if any codes are set and what the old plugs looked like.

I hope this information is helpful. If you have any questions let me know. You can reply back to me through this thread at any time.
