Customer Question

That beautiful clicking noise in the HVAC that is all the rage across the internet, of course.

good morning my name is roy and I will assist

does the ac work correctly on both sides and all the vent controls??

the noise is the blend door actuators. the gears inside the motors are plastic and do make noise after a period of time.

the HVAC seems to work after these "actuators" get through with their temper tantrum. They click away for a specific time period, then things are fine. Problem is, it causes me to leave the car running because I don't want to hear all that again every time I put in the key.

Nice to meet you, Roy.
Expert:  Roy replied 1 year ago.

thank you, ***** ***** help

the only way to eliminate it is to replace the motors. they are small motors under the dash.

let me look up the info for you

Roy

Customer: replied 1 year ago.
Thanks, ***** ***** it true what the various forums are saying, that I'll likely have to replace them again at a later date?
Expert:  Roy replied 1 year ago.

ok, no recalls or tech bulletins on them

yes, due to the construction of them, they will be a failure in the future as well. its an engineering issue to save weight and money.

even the gm originals are made the same way as the aftermarket designs

is there anything tricky I need to be aware of as far as accessing these things? How many total, and where? You've already stated that the vender is of little consequence.
Expert:  Roy replied 1 year ago.

is this single zone or dual zone??

Roy

Customer: replied 1 year ago.
I think it's dual, since I have two temp. controllers.
Expert:  Roy replied 1 year ago.

ok, there is one on each side under the dash . they are secured to the case with a couple of small screws and an electrical connector. the one for the vent controls is up top on the case and the dash board has to be removed to gain access. hopefully that on is not making noise.

let me get a picture of the motor

I'm sure it IS. In fact, you say there are only two? Because I've heard at least three different sound signatures coming from the dash.
Customer: replied 1 year ago.
There's a very subtle clicking upon opening the door coming from the passenger side. Then that's followed by an even louder one from the same side, followed by the loudest one that comes from behind the driver's dash.
Customer: replied 1 year ago.
These have definite time intervals of about a minute. If it's caused by a broken tooth in a gear, that leaves me puzzled.
Customer: replied 1 year ago.
if I DO have to remove the dash, are there special tools involved?
Expert:  Roy replied 1 year ago.

no special tools at all. a good 1/4 inch drive set for small screws and 3/8 for the bigger ones. just time consuming work.

Again, you say there are only two. Any thoughts on the three different sound signatures?
Expert:  Roy replied 1 year ago.

no, I said in a previous post there are 2 for the zone , one on each side, and one on top for the vent controls. there are 3 total. thats why I asked if it was 2 zone or 1.

Roy

Customer: replied 1 year ago.
8:28 posting? The way it was phrased, I didn't understand it to mean three. So there are three total, which means I'll likely be replacing all three.
Expert:  Roy replied 1 year ago.

that would be correct

Roy

Customer: replied 1 year ago.
they all look the same?
Expert:  Roy replied 1 year ago.

that is correct

Oy!!!
Any online sources I can look up for a breakdown of how the dash comes apart?
Expert:  Roy replied 1 year ago.

sites such as mitchel or ondemand 5, alldata. you can get daily passes for a small fee that will give you step by step instructions.

that what I use. it costs me personally to get info for my answers.

I don't understand. I've responded to each one, sometimes more than once.
Expert:  Roy replied 1 year ago.

you must hit the accept button or 3 smiley faces to accept.

I only get a small portion of what the site charges you. thats the way I get paid. it is vague the way they have it listed.

thanks

Expert:  Roy replied 1 year ago.

how are you making out

Customer: replied 1 year ago.
I haven't had the chance to check it out. Been working. I have a window this Sunday, and I was going to check it then.I don't see an "accept" button or smiley faces. I'm viewing the sight through my phone.
Expert:  Roy replied 1 year ago.

ok, just ry to hit the accept button for me.
