2001 chevy impala Fan Switch stopped working in all but

Customer Question

2001 chevy impala Fan Switch stopped working in all but switch position 4. Then after a few months it stopped. now i have no defrost or air conditioning. The only thing that I can say is the front glass cracked last year during the winter from change and temperature and there has been a slight water leak into the passenger driver floor board. Whether that has anything to do with it I don't know. Just giving you all the information I have.

Hi Les,

I would say the fan speed resistor went open circuit from higher than normal current demand by the fan motor.

Yes, the water leak could be the culprit, onto the fan motor bearings/brushes etc.

The fan motor has then finally failed a few months later.

When I get a fault like this I always replace the fan motor and the resistor at the same time.

Replacing a resistor only would fail in a short time with a failing fan motor.

Hope this helps.
