Added coolant. But then there was no temp reading at all

Heat does not blow hot either

You need to find and address why it overheated in the first place. Possible causes:

faulty fan

stuck thermostat

restricted radiator

blown head gasket

bad water pump

coolant leak

The issue now is likely a air pocket in the system. Run the engine with the coolant cap off and the heat on to belch out the air trapped i nthe cooling system that prevents the coolant from flowing.
