What causes emergency brake to be on in my 2005 Chevy 5.3 l

No I have not inspected my rear shoes

Seems like it is something inside the transmission or possibly some kind of switch. Today when I went to back out of the garage put in reverse and felt like the emergency brake was still engaged. Put it in Drive then reverse again gave it a little gas and and felt like I released the brake kind of a pop and truck started to move back normaly. Stopped outside the garage so my daughter could get in. Put it in park so the door would unlock. Put it back into reverse and again felt like I was applying the brake while accelerating and felt the truck start to tourque and twist like I was going to do a brake stand. Put it in Nuetral and it would not even roll down the driveway. Put it in Drive and felt the same as if the Brake was applied. Put the E brake back on pulled the release felt it release. But still felt the same. Started to apply the brake and when it was pushed about halfway down. I could feel the brake release with a pop and the truck started to move in reverse but straining since I was applying the brake. Soon as I started to release the Brake it felt like I put it in park and the truck just stopped again. Push on the brake seemed to release again but with a pop or a snap but felt like it wanted to move but again I was applying the brake to make this happen. Let the brake go and truck just came to a halt as if I slammed on the brake Does not matter if I put the truck in drive or reverse still feels like the brakes are applied. Put it neutral can feel like it not in gear but as if the brake is still on and won't roll down the driveway???
