How difficult is it to replace a knock sensor on a 2006 cobalt 4 cylinder engine?

The knock sensor is relatively easy to replace.


Do you have the 2.0 or the 2.2 or the 2.4 liter engine?

The starter must be removed first to access the knock sensor. The knock sensor is on the side of the block, facing the radiator, above the starter. The knock sensor is held in place with one bolt. When installing the new knock sensor, make sure not to overtighten the mounting bolt. Tighten to 18 ft. lb.

How imperitive is it that the sensor be replaced immediately

It is not that imperative. The computer will not fully advance the timing so you may have a loss of a few mpg, but other than that, no harm will result.
