92 Lumina: radiator fan..Auxiliary..I disconnect coolant temp sensor…

Customer Question
Hi. On my 92...
Hi. On my 92 Lumina, 3.1 engine, primary radiator fan doesn't come on, even after car has been running and hot. Auxiliary fan does come on when I turn on a/c. Both fans DO come on when I disconnect coolant temp sensor. I replaced this CT sensor, but no change. Have also tried changing relay for radiator fan. Separately, I did change radiator coolant level sensor. Suggestions of other things to check that might be causing primary cooling fan not to operate? If any parts, tell me please name and indicate where located. Thanks.

john :

Hello & Welcome to JA,

john :

The computer controlls the fans as it sees a need.if your vehicle does not overheat there is no need for concern.

Customer:

Oh my. I am surprised by this rather flilp and thin answer. Of course, I would NOT have gone through all these steps and repairs if the coolant had not been getting hot! Let me add another detail to be clear: I have been able to keep the coolant from boiling out entirely by turning the air conditioner on -- which kicks in the secondary coolant fan. However, now that I am in the hottest months, the secondary fan is not enough, and I often arrive at my destination after maybe a 15 minute trip with coolant boiling over the overflow tank. I have known for some time that the primary radiator fan was not working as it should. (even as noted, I AM able to manually get it to work by disconnected coolant sensor) So back to my original question, apart from the ECM, is there another switch or sensor on the engine that might explain why the primary radiator fan never comes on as it should??

john :

I tink maybe you should be handled by someone else. You have a good evening & I will opt out so another expert can help you.....

Customer:

Ok, thank you. I am still hopeful that one of your colleagues might have a suggestion....?
