Hello,

What kind of intake are you running (single or dual plane)? What is your BASE timing set at? Do you know the cam duration? - Thanks, Dave

not sure about the cam friend just bought the car it has a summit aluminum intake with a medium rise and two elongated holes for the four barrel carb not sure how to identify single or dual plane intakes the best spot i can find for my timing is right at 40 degrees advance which seems really high to me the owner said this car ran great when he bought it about a month ago and after driving for about a week it just died so his father in law and his cousin started twisting and turning (mistake number one) but they brought it back to life with no idle and no top end i found a faulty msd box a broken engine to frame ground and a weak battery i installed hei distributor fixed ground and installed optima battery cam duration unknown
Chevy Mechanic: AutoDoc, ASE Certified Technician replied 8 years ago
OK - The intake is a DUAL plane which is not really what should be used on a mechanical cam - mechanical cams (with flat tappets) are typically going to make power in the 3000 - 7000 rpm power range due to the high lift characteristics - the timing should be around 6 degrees BTDC (to start) with distributor advance disconnected and it idle - if you want power lower in the RPM range, you are going to need to change to a hydraulic cam but still use the intake you have - With the set up you have now, the motor will not make good power at lower RPM's - Thanks, Dave.

any chance it could be in the vaive adjustment ive gotten mixed answers on the proceedure i know where to adjust each valve but it has roller rockers wich the family twisted on first but i loosened them back up tighten until i couldnt spin the push rod then added a quarter turn ive heard that some are supposed to be adjusted with a filler gauge ?
Chevy Mechanic: AutoDoc, ASE Certified Technician replied 8 years ago

Spinning the push rod until it stops then another quarter turn, is for HYDRAULIC lifters - mechanical lifters have a lash adjustment - but, that is not where your power loss lies - give me about a half hour and I will get you the proper adjustment lash for the mechanical lifters - Thanks, Dave

ok

The clearance for the rocker arms to valve stem is .030" for the mechanical tappets - Rotate motor to #1 TDC and adjust Intake valves 1,2,5 and 7 and Exhaust valves 1,3,4 and 8 then rotate crankshaft one rotation #6 TDC and adjust Intake valves 3,4,6 and 8 and Exhaust valves 2,5,6 and 7 - Thanks, Dave
