This answer was rated:

Does anyone have the procedure to replace the sensor on a 246 gm transfer case encoder motor or a link to the procedure?
Thank you.

Customer: replied 7 years ago.

04 GMC SIERRA. GM PART #88962315 It is the sensor in the encoder motor on a gm 246 transfer case. We have been told the gears need to be aligned and that there is a special procedure to do that during replacement of the sensor. It is a round donut shaped sensor. We have also been told by the dealer it will need to be reflashed after it is replaced. Thanks.

what motor do you have
Customer: replied 7 years ago.

5.3L engine. 4l60E auto transmission.

How do we know if the gear has overturned or is out of postition. How do you time the gears if it has been overturned? Thanks.

It needs only to match, and the dots inside the assembly will help. YOu can use a set of pliers to turn the shaft on the transfer case. If there is a clutch issue in the transfer case has failed, it will also set this code because the actuator turns out of range as well.
