The gasket should cost about $400-$450 without ac and about $450-$500 with ac depending on your local labor rate. There is no way that I can think of to "sabotage" an intake gasket, this is actually one of the most common repairs on GM v6 and v8 engines. I'm not saying there was absolutely no shady business but highly unlikely. There could have been small amounts of coolant seeping which would never reach the ground for you to see it. These gasket do all of a sudden just blow out.
