VerifiedYou need to take the vehicle to a shop that can scan it for transfer case control module codes. What apparently happened is the 4X4 system failed and went into neutral. When the Service 4X4 light came on the control module set a code. That code will point to the part that has failed, I suspect the switch unit possibly, but the code will point in the right direction. It will have to be a well equipped independent shop with a GM programmed scanner or a dealer.
Well, your transmission did not go into neutral, it was the transfer case. The trans was still spinning and that's why it ground when you put it in park. The transfer case can be put into neutral but should not do it by itself. In fact you are lucky because if the car was on a hill and your transfer case stayed in Neutral it would have rolled down the hill since park would not hold. Just in case, before you get it fixed, use your emergency brake because if the transfer case does it again by itself it could be dangerous.
