I sounds to me like you are describing a bad wheel bearing, not a tire problem. You don't want to go on a long trip with a bad wheel bearing. Not only will the noise drive you crazy but if it fails completely on the road it will most likely cost a lot more than getting it fixed at home at your convenience.
