Hello and welcome to Just Answer,

Was the engine's distributor removed or tampered with lately?

Customer: replied 9 years ago.
Expert:  Scott K replied 9 years ago.
Most of the time this is caused by a distributor not insalled correctly, if this is not the case other causes are:
A loose CMP sensor causing a variance in the sensor signal
Excessive free play in the timing chain and gear assembly
Incorrectly installed distributor - 1 tooth off in either advance or retard positions
A loose distributor rotor on the distributor shaft
A loose or missing distributor hold down bolt
  • A faulty crank position sensor.
A scan tool is need to check some these causes, I can send a diagnostic chart if needed.

Let me know
Customer: replied 9 years ago.
Yes i would like a diagnostic chart what scan tool is needed for what?
Customer: replied 9 years ago.
Send diagnostic chart. thanks
Expert:  Scott K replied 9 years ago.

I am working on getting the diag chart for you. having some technical difficulties. I am gonna reboot and be back in a few.

Didn't want to leave you waiting and wondering.

A scan tool is needed to observe the crank and cam signals and spark advance settings in the PCM.

Still having problems, my website for my service information is currently down, I will keep trying and see if I can post it later.

In the meantime if this code appeared out of the blue and it is the only code you are receiving, I would do the preliminary checks listed above in my first post which is part of the diag chart anyway.

Sorry for the delay

This code did appeared out of the blue. I was a towing a 4000 lb trailer .The milage is 81000 miles. I had replaced the engine oil cooling lines 300 miles before light came on. Could leaking oil make a fault with thecrank postion sensor?
Expert:  Scott K replied 9 years ago.

Not likely the crank is in the front timing chain cover and the tip is constantly splashed with oil.

It may be intermittant I would clear and see if it comes back, A jarring from the trailer may have set the DTC.

I got the diag chart click below and related schematic.
