I'm very sorry I've should of also asked you if was a manual or automatic transmission.
However let me try to answer your question as if it was a automatic( manual transmission
in a blazer was very rare) so back to your original question, so now when you shift into reverse what happens? no reverse gear? or does the transmission make a horrible grinding noise? have you tried to drive the vehicle in foward?and if so does the transmission take a long time to shift out of first gear?

Automatic trans. No grinding when trying to put in reverse, just no gear. takes long time to shift into 1st when driving forward.

Well I'm sorry to say sounds like the sun shell in the transmission splines to sun gear are possibly worn to the point that the sun shell and sun gear no longer can provide power flow through the transmission. (Power flow is for 2nd, 4th and reverse) to verify this you will need to tear down the transmission and perform inspection assuming line pressure is within specs. So based on information you have provided and with 174 k miles depending on if your going to keep this vehicle I would recommend a S.R.T.A (service replacement transmission replacement) from a G.M. dealership warranty is 3 years 100 k miles no matter who installs the srta unit. I would highly recommend professional diagnostics before you decide to spend up to 2k dollars for a srta. I hope this really helps if you have any other question feel free to reply, otherwise your feedback is appreciated.
