it has crashed and gone into restore mode
JA: What's the make/model of your device? How old is it?
Customer: iphone 6, a year old
JA: How long has this been going on? What troubleshooting have you tried?
Customer: so i was doing the latest operating system update, and it crashed and the 'plug in to itunes' message showed up on the screen i did this, but dont want to loose the photos that are on it they are not backed up yet
JA: Anything else you want the phone expert to know before I connect you?
Customer: i want to know if there is a way i can put the phone into recovery mode on itunes without loosing the pictures on it thanks

No this is part of apples security. There are people who can recover pictures but the are costly.

Apple has some of the hardest to work around security. I am sorry :( they want everyone to back up there info all the time for this reason.

hmm. i'll have to talk to the IT guys at work. I was overseas so didnt want to upload tons of photos over mobile data, then this happens.....thanks anyway
